'A science whiz? You flunked all those classes!' I said laughing slightly as I washed the rags.

'You rubbed off me. I just read and read and found I have a secret passion for science. Unbelievable, right?' he said as he helped me wring the rags.

'Not unbelievable,' I corrected smiling wistfully.

David cracked a huge grin. 'That's what I wonder about you, Mich. How can you find good in everyone? I'm rich, conceited, rude and I came to kill you. Yet, it's too easy to forgive me, and find my knowledge casual? I can't remember you like this. What happened?' he asked purely concerned.

Before I could say a word, I heard the deafening roar of a chopper. 'That's my ride,' he muttered.

I wiped my soapy hands on my jeans and then pulled him into an awkward hug. 'I owe you everything. Trust me, you'll get something worth remembering,' he told me as he ran outside.

'Bye!' I called feigning enthusiasm. I went outside to find him entering the black helicopter. As soon as he was in, he removed a brown parcel from his jacket.

'For Cloe!' he shouted as he threw it to me. I caught it neatly. The helicopter flew up and out of sight.

'Loon,' I muttered as I entered the house with the parcel in my hand.

Cloe and I were in the kitchen, Cloe holding a petite phone. That was the gift from David. 'Are you positive he said that your father sent him?' asked Cloe nibbling on an apple.

'Yes,' I said as I flipped the pan making half the omelette fall in a pile on the floor. 'Ew,' I said as Cloe cleaned it.

'You should be in the Guinness Book of World Records for worst cook,' Cloe said as she put the saved egg in the sauce. I sat on her stool, exasperated.

'I hate cooking anyway. Hurry up, I'm ravenous,' I said as I went upstairs leaving Cloe to cook. Mum was having a nap, and frankly, she needed it.

I decided to call Shayne. Then I remembered the phone was still outside. I cursed under my breath and ran outside, getting a scolding from Cloe.

'No running in the house!' she chided me.

I chuckled as I felt in the dark for the reciever. I finally found it. It still had a dial tone. Weird, I couldn't remember calling anyone. I cut it then dialled Shayne's number.

One ring...

Two....

Three....

Four....

'Hello?'

'Hi, Shayne!' I cried happily.

'What do you want?' he asked harshly.

'Just wondering if we got any work today. I did miss school,' I said stung. What had I done this time?

'Did you? I didn't even notice you were gone. Anyway, we didn't get any homework at all, ' he said coldly.

I had no words. After a moment's painful silence, he said, 'If you're done, I need to go.'

He hung up before I could even huff. This was the reason I didn't tie to people. I walked back to the house, the warm aroma of spaghetti and sauce everywhere. I walked slowly up the stairs, a tiny pain in my heart. 'Sis, aren't you eating?' Cloe asked as she served some food on a plate.

'No,' I said then added ,'Not hungry. I lost my appetite,'

I didn't wait for her reply. I just went to our shared bedroom and threw myself on the bed. In the darkness, it was hard to re-arrange my jumbled thoughts. I just lay there thinking of how wrong I was.

After an hour or so of thinking, I realized the truth.

I was to succeed. Shayne or anyone else would not destroy or jeopardize that. He would just leave, like my father. I would pass before that. And as sleep finally caught up with me, I had a plan forming in my dreams.

Ignorance is bliss. I repeated in my head as I shut my eyes and fell asleep with a contended sigh.
