My family had always been of the poorer in the City, so we lived on the outskirts, overlooking the Brink. The first time I'd witnessed a Banishing was when I was five.
I remember it like it was yesterday.
The boy looked to be only a year or two older than me as they pushed him out of the back of a cargo truck, over the threshold and into the savage wasteland called the Brink.
And then they drove away without looking back.
I stared at him, wondering what he was going to do as he stood there looking towards the heart of the City. He continued like that for a moment before he suddenly spit at the ground on the inside of the threshold and then just simply turned around and walked away. Away from the warmth, the comfort, and the safety of the City and out to the unknown.
But little did I know then, that there was no warmth inside the City. Only searing fire and frigid ice.
