Today was Jamie's first day as the new stylist for One Direction. She woke up much too soon, and hour too soon to be exact. She looked over at her clock: six am. She felt a pit in her stomach as she tossed and turned waiting for her phone to chime at the strike of seven. Jamie had lied on her job application form.
She said she was 23, really she was 19. Jamie had heard of the band of course, but didn't know too much. She was never one who wanted to research celebrities. They deserve privacy to. Stil, she wanted nothing more than to be a part of their team, and while she could sing and was pretty good at a handful of instruments, she knew music itself would never get her into the crew. So she decided to pour her heat out into makeup and hair because it was just something she loved. When she heard that one direction needed a new stylist, she jumped at the opportunity. That's why she fudged her application. She had too. Lucky for her, the interviewer fell instantly in love with her style; one look at her portfolio and she was in.
Jamie recalled this and her nerves settled slightly. She blinked morning tears out of her eyes and decided to get out of bed. She was too excited to sleep anyway.
"Luci you're crushing my chest move girl." She spoke to her australian shepherd with love and a tinge of annoyance.
"Come on girl get off" The dog just starred Jamie with a confused look on her face.
"This is why I named you Lucifer, you know. You never listen." Luci tilted her head and let out a little wine.
"You're lucky I love you." With that, Jamie pushed the puppy off her chest and sat up, ready to prepare for her day.
She walked over to her closet and riffled through the rack of shirts hanging in her closet. She pulled out a white long sleeved turtle neck and a pair of light pink corduroy jeans before tossing them on the bed along with a black belt and her favorite black boots.
She walked into her bathroom and looked at herself in the mirror.
"You're ready Jamie you can do this. The concert tonight will go great and the boys will look amazing. They don't even require that much work...It's just five boys." She gave herself a pep talk every morning. yeah, five boys that make up arguably the most known boy band in the world and could end your career in seconds.
She shook the thought out of her head and applied a generous amount of toothpaste on her pink toothbrush. Jamie loved the sting of mint against her cheek.
She finished brushing and washed her face.
She was pretty. The simple kind where she blended in but when you really looked at her it was hard to look away. She had brown hair that fell down to the middle of her back in soft waves and clear blue eyes that verged on grey and seemed to change color in different lights.
Once she felt clean and refreshed, she put on a light layer of makeup--she didn't like wearing too much because it always seemed to smudge by the end of the day. Jamie tossed her hair into a quick ponytail and walked out of the bathroom.
She got dressed, but not without tripping as she pulled her jeans on. She always seemed to be tripping over something...maybe it was nothing. She didn't know, all she knew was that she was a clutz.
"How do I look luci?" she asked the dog with a bright smile, Luci just wagged her tail.
"Stunning I know."
It was now seven thirty and Jamie had about an hour and a half to kill before she had to go to the venue. She only lived 30 minutes away so she'd be driving herself. She hated flying and was so thankful the first three stops would be on the road rather than in the air.
She walked into the kitchen. She loved her apartment she shared with her mom Emily. It was just them for as long as Jamie could remember, and she didn't mind. The whole house was decorated with old band posters and vinyl shelves, there was nothing Emily and Jamie bonded over more than music.
Her favorite part of the whole apartment was the kitchen. It had a breakfast nook and white counters and yellow walls and just felt like she was standing in the middle of the sun. This morning, her mom stood cutting up berries and humming to an Ed Sherran song.
"Morning Jay, youre ready early." Emily turned to face her daughter with a warm smile as she cleaned the fruit juice from her hands. Jamie smiled fondly and hugged her mother at the sound of her nickname. Jamie had a strong affection for nicknames and had almost a dozen for every person she knew.
"Mmhmm. I was too excited to sleep in any longer, todays the big day you know." she said.
"Well, I was just about to make some smoothies before heading to work. I can make you one if you'd like. Strawberry apple, your favorite." Emily started piling the fruit into a blender and pushed down on the lid, drowning out the music with the loud machine.
"Mom, mom!" the blender stopped. "It's okay, there is a coffee shop down the street from the venue. I think I'll just stop there."
Emily looked down at her pile of berries and apples and sighed.
"Oh well, more for me then. Make sure to grab a coat on your way out okay? I hung your black one up by the door." She leaned into Jamie and placed a quick kiss on her cheek. "Have fun today, say hi to the boys for me." Emily winked at her daughter as she rolled her eyes and walked towards the door, grabbing her black backpack and coat on the way out.Jamie stood in the elevator tapping her hands against her thighs as she waited to walk to her car. Once outside she inhaled the cold autumn breeze and closed her eyes as she listened to the crunch her boots made on the leaves falling around her. This was her favorite time of year. It was cold and the days were short and the nights were long and there seemed to be a shift in everyone's mood as they prepared for the string of holidays coming in the next few months.
She hopped in her small white car and drove off towards the more downtown area of the city.
It was strange, she thought, that for a concert at eight PM she had to be at the venue by eleven. But then again, she had no idea how music worked and she guessed they had to do sound checks and run throughs and whatever else bands did.
...
She pulled up to sweet pea cafe with just enough time to grab a latte and walk over to the huge stadium. Her phone buzzed in her pocket with various "good luck" texts from friends and family. She decided to turn it off and put it back in her pocket. She could have no distractions today, everything had to be perfect.
She walked along the busy street with both hands wrapped around her cup and warming them as she went. She always had small hands. Jamie was thankful she grabbed the coat like her mother said. Although she loved the feeling of the cold on her cheeks and in the air, she wasn't a fan of being cold all together.
She walked through the venue flashing her new ID card what felt like a million times before she finally got into it. She just stood in awe as dozens of people milled around with clipboards and wires and well just about anything you would need to put on a show.
"Are you okay sweetie, you look a bit lost. Are you here for the show?" A women who looked to be about 40 spoke to Jamie with an equal mix of concern and friendliness.
"Oh no, I'm supposed to be meeting the boys and the rest of the show team. Im Jamie. Jamie Conner. I'm the new makeup and hair stylist." She felt like she was back at her first day of school with all the older kids running around her as she waited for a teacher to point her in the right direction.
"Well it's great to meet you, I'm Sarah I am in charge of wardrobe. The band won't be here for a little while but I can take you to where you'll be getting them ready so you can get all set up. Your cosmetic cart was delivered yesterday right?" she asked
"Yes" Jamie smiled. Happy to at least know one name before meeting the boys themselves.
"Perfect, you can follow me"
They walked through a maze of staff and instruments before arriving at a room filled with clothes racks and smelling of stale hair spray.
"This is your counter, feel free to set up however you want."
Jamie nodded a polite thankyou as Sarah walked out. She got to work laying out everything she might need and smiled to herself as she realized her dream job was real.Ahhh first chapter!!!
What do we think of Jamie so far?
