"Mr. Malfoy, please! Stop that incessant whinging. You are fine!" I heard Madam Pomfrey, the matron of the school's Hospital Wing, shouted frustratedly. I imagined it hadn't been the first time she had said this as she wouldn't wake her ill students for no good reason. It took me a moment to realise I was one of them.
"Wha-a-aht..." I tried to speak but cheeks were stuffed with material; I could still breathe so I imagined Madam Pomfrey hadn't put it there to kill me. I tried to lift my right arm to remove it from my mouth but I winced so hard at the pain that the rest of my body pulsed and hurt rippled through my bones.
"Oh no, dear, don't try and move just yet." Madam Pomfrey appeared, pulling back the curtain and reaching for the damp compress she had placed next to my bed. She dabbed gently at my lips to wet them so not to crack them before pulling the material from my mouth. My eyes widened at the sight of the blood stained cloth and Pomfrey said the panic in my eyes and placed it out of sight. "We didn't want you to choke on any blood, that's all."
As I went to look again, I spotted Pansy helping Draco limp out of the wing, only stopping to wink at me before disappearing.
"What happened?" I asked, my voice croaking slightly.
"They believe you fainted on the stairs and took a very nasty fall," A voice mimicked as the curtain was ripped open to the left of me. It was Harry, dressed in hospital pyjamas and his arm in a sling. I slowly tilted my head towards him, beckoning for more. "It's obvious someone did this to her, Madam Pomfrey. You can't let her stay in there with them."
For a moment, I tried to smile but it caused me too much pain. Madam Pomfrey ushered Harry back into his bed, angrily drawing the curtain back so that I could no longer see Harry. Why was he here? Did I miss the Quidditch game? She began to tend to dressings but after a short while, there was a disturbance outside and the curtain ripped open again.
"What is so important that you have to drag me out of my only free period? It's the only time I get- what the fuck!" It was Oliver. I struggled to keep my eyes open but I didn't want him to see me looking so weak. He stopped at the end of my bed, ignoring Madam Pomfrey's request that he should leave as if he didn't hear her.
"Mr Wood, watch your la-"
"What happened?" He asked her, interrupting Madam Pomfrey mid-sentence.
"She was found at the bottom of the stairs in her dormitory. We believe she fainted, possibly due to skipping meals, and fell all the way down." Madam Pomfrey instructed, shooing the entourage he had following him and allowed him to stand next to me. How did she know I've been skipping meals?
"She fell, and got- got this - skipping wha- what?" Oliver couldn't form a sentence. I wanted him to hold my hand right now but the pain that I had felt looked like nothing compared to what was in his eyes. I reached my fingers upwards, only then noticing that a few of them were bandaged.
"She didn't fall!" Harry shouted from behind the curtain. Madam Pomfrey tutted and shook her head as Oliver yanked the curtain back and walked up to Harry.
"What do you mean? What do you know?" persisted Oliver.
"Do you really think someone would look that bad just from falling down the stairs?" Harry sounded pissed, not in general but specifically at Oliver.
"Well, no, I guess no-"
"Maybe if you looked after her more than whatever effort you call what you're currently doing, things like this wouldn't be happening to her all the time!" Harry shouted and I closed my eyes. I shouldn't have told Hermione. She was trying to help, she was trying to help, I repeated between my lips as I heard Oliver slowly walked back to my bedside. He didn't say anything, not whilst my eyes were closed and nothing still when I opened them.
