OCTOBER
The crunch of dead leaves beneath my feet put a satisfied smile on my face as I walk to school. I stroll along my accustom route until I see my best friend, jumping up and down around the corner. We always go to school together.
Today was different. I sense a pair of eyes on me. Possibly the same ones I've encountered before.
"Hey, best friend." Amelia sings. A difference from her usual mood.
Then I realize it was the month of her birthday. The only month she has a similar energy every day, as I have every month.
"Yeah, yeah. Your birthday's on Halloween we get it." I attempt to annoy her.
"What?" she asks with sarcasm, "No 'hello, how was your morning?'"
"Hello, how was your morning?" I ask, complying.
"Oh my god! You wouldn't believe it! I just found out Tony Reid is having a Halloween party at his house, on Halloween!" she shrieks the last part.
Tony Reid was one of the rich kids that went to our school. His parents were always away, probably on business trips. This left him their mansion to himself, which he used to full advantages.
By the looks of Amelia, she finally convinced her strict parents to let her celebrate her birthday late out at night. She likely used her turning-eighteen-card.
"There's still so much time why would he announce this now? And, isn't that a Thursday?" I ask confused
"Don't know, and don't care. As long as it's on my birthday we're going." she says determined.
I know for a fact that when Amelia sets on one thing, she won't settle for anything else. In sixth grade, I remember vividly how hard she punched Floyd for asking why I was shy. After many attempts of convincing her of his good intentions, Amelia was finally aware of Floyd's intentions. It took her several years, and that proves my point. She is the boldest person I know.
We make our way to school and meet up with Floyd. Amelia takes it as her job to tell him about the party.
My anxiety sets in for the second time in the day, with the same uneasiness.
"Yeah, I know about the party." he says, confidently, "I have other friends you know."
Amelia looks at me, and I look at her. We know he has other friends. He's an ice hockey player, of course he does. He was probably even invited by his teammate, Tony Reid, himself. But, we just love getting on his nerves.
"Oh yeah sure!" she says, sarcastically.
