I tripped on the street, skidding across the concrete and skinning my knees and hands. "Oh my gosh are you okay?" Jasmine asked as I began to cry in pain.
"What happened?" Frost asked, coming close. She hadn't seen what'd happened. "I-I tripped, and fell." I said, wiping my tears on my sleeve. Jasmine knelt down beside me as I shifted to look at my wound. But there was none there.
"Are you sure?" Frost asked in a skeptical tone. "I swear I did!" I said, begging for her to believe me. "She did! I saw it!" Jasmine said, touching my knee. Even though I wasn't visibly injured, it still hurt like I'd gotten an injury. Frost just snorted, "Attention-seeker."
"Here, I'll help you up." Jasmine put an arm around me and helped pull me up, her legs stumbling. I bit my lip to stifle another cry of pain. Frost had been one of my closest friends. I knew that as kids got older they grew apart, but it hurt. Ginger had never told me it would hurt like it did.
"Thanks Jasmine." I murmured. "You're welcome." She said, helping me limp towards our destination - my home.
My mother hadn't seen the fall because she was on the phone with my dad, her eyes closed as she rubbed her temples. I hadn't seen my dad in years. Ginger said Dad left us, but I didn't believe her, because Mom still told us he would come back soon.
As we walked to the garage, where my mom was on the phone, we heard her arguing, but stayed silent. "Mom?" I asked. She looked up, hissed, "Give me a minute, Max," into the phone, and cocked her head, looking at us. "What are you doing?"
"She fe-" I cut off Jasmine by saying, "We're gonna get water." My mother nodded and continued her argument as we went inside the house.
"Why didn't you let me finish?" Jasmine asked. "Mom would get really mad if I told her I got hurt but..didn't get hurt." I explained. "Oh..." She fell silent, pondering the thought. "That makes sense."
I sighed. "Yeah." My ankle buckled as we made our way over to the couch, and I pulled Jasmine down with me as I fell. "Sorry." I said as she stood up. Jasmine smiled softly, "It's okay, Pearl."
