My Body by Young the Giant blasts as we fly through the mountain road. The humid air pushing against our faces through the open roof of my Jeep. I look over from the driver's seat to my two best friends with a grin, tapping my fingers to the beat of the song.
Samantha rests in the passenger's seat with her feet kicked on the dash, making funny hand gestures as if she was conducting the music herself. Her strawberry blonde hair looks unruly as she let it whip around
Annalise lays in the back, stretching across the seats while munching on watermelon sour patch kids. She sings quietly to the song, occasionally sticking her hand out the car to feel the wind press against it.
As I turn back to the road I think about what we are heading to, my stomach tightening. It was my first year being a camp counselor at our local summer camp. Anna and Sam had finally managed to drag me along this time as this wasn't somewhere I would be by choice. I knew that it wouldn't be bad since I had them but I couldn't help but feel nervous.
I turn down the music as I pull into the entrance, noticing the colorful sign which read, "Anderson Summer Camp." Samantha rolls her eyes at the sign, hating that her last name was shown so loudly. Her dad owns the camp so she has been coming here every summer for as long as she could remember.
"C'mon Maeve let's get going," she shouts, jumping out of the car with Anna after I park. I grumbl as I grab all my things before following the two like a lost puppy while they talk about all the things that will be happening.
"Isn't there some new counselors this year with us Sam?" Anna asks.
Sam smirks, "Yes, and from what I hear from my dad is that they're British."
"No way, hot British dudes..?" Anna's jaw dropps.
"Hot British dudes baby," Sam affirms as they fist-bump. I chuckle behind them at their antics. While I definitely would not hate for any hot boys to be here I knew I wouldn't let it go far. Not too long ago I had broken up with my douche bag of an ex and let's just say that my faith in the male race is not too high at the moment.
"Here we are lovelies," Sam states, dropping her bags and turning around to spread her hands. She stood at the foot of a large building that looks cabin-like. As I look around I could see various buildings that stretch all over the place. "Maeve since you've never been here before I'll talk you through a couple of things. Sorry, Anna but you're gonna have to hear this talk again," Anna groans, and I giggle, "This is the main building where my dad and the people who run everything work, all the cabins are over there," she points to a large cluster of small buildings, "we sleep with our campers but we get our own room thank god. Then there's the other building for activities, such as the music and arts center, water sports at the lake, and all the outdoor activities are stretched out within the woods. Any questions?"
"Uh nope not really." I reply, eyes wide at all the information. I don't think I really even processed all of that but I really didn't want to listen to another spiel of hers.
"Okie dokie let's go get our cabin number!" We left our bags outside and went inside, I notice Sam's dad as we enter. He stands at 6'3 and while he looks incredibly intimidating is basically a teddy bear.
"Hey girls ready to get your cabin assignments?" he said excitedly, he has been waiting for Sam to become a counselor since she was little. He hands us the list and a packet of rules and guidelines for the counselors to read.
Sam looks through the list to find what cabin the three of us will be in, "Okay looks like Anna and I are in Cabin 3... Wait that's weird it says Maeve's in Cabin 6 with another counselor."
My breath hitches, "What!?" I grabb the list and read it, seeing that in fact we were split into different cabins, "Are you sure this is correct Sam?"
"Yep, it's not a mistake, I guess even me being his daughter doesn't give us any bonuses," she frowns, "but don't worry we will still be together for a ton of other things," She gave me a weak smile and I just deadpann at her, not caring to hide my emotion.
We split up to go to our separate cabins. My suitcase bounces on the uneven gravel, hitting the backs of my feet, causing myself to half limp. I must look like an idiot I think to myself. By the time I open the cabin I was just happy to get off the damn gravel.
Breathing out in frustration I drag my things into the cabin very ready to lay down and not get up again. I notice about 12 bunkbeds lined up against the walls. So these are where the little devils will be staying. To be clear I don't hate kids, but the annoying ones can be a pain in the ass. I know I will have to fake my emotions to some of them this summer, so that's just lovely. I see a door in the back which must by me and my co-counseler's room and make my way towards it.
Opening the door I see something which must be a mistake, a curly brown haired man was standing in the middle of the room, unpacking a bag. He turns around to me, eyebrows scrunching in confusion.
"
"The fuck?" he speaks in a english accent."Who the hell are you?" I groan out, dropping my bags.
The mysterious man smirks, "I could say the same thing."
