(I refer to the characters as 'we' so yeah) This isn't a great explanation and probably confusing but, here's a little backstory on the universe:
We're all from au's but in the same au if that makes sense? Like different au's in one big au, but then also in different time periods. (i.e. Worried is in 1944 while Wholesome (you'll meet them both soon :)) is in 1983.) These scientists wanted to see if they could make living emotions, and they did. One emotion was chosen for each kid based on tests and they began trying to make them their emotions. This group was the first successful group in years that had turned into our emotions pretty much.
The whole "Masked" thing: You'll find out soon, but we wear masks displaying our emotion at ALL TIMES. We've never thought of taking them off because we don't really realize that other people don't wear them.
More science backstory stuff: So basically back in the 1980s, there were these insane scientists, from the normal universe. We are all test subjects. So basically we are all in this universe (Earth) to see how we react in this world. We have no memory of what has happened and why we are here, we don't know the universe (Earth) is a different universe from ours. We notice that they don't know what some things are, but don't assume anything of it.
