I walked home from school not a care in the world. I don't usually go straight home but today I was going out with my mum, she works a lots to keeps us going so we don't get much 'us' time. I walked home a skip in my step, excited for our night out. I skipped up the fount steps, mum car must be in the garage, as it wasn't out front.

"Mum," I called out walking through the front door.

Passing the answering machine I noticed the blinking light indication we had a message. Walking over I pressed the play button and clasped on the couch.

"Hi sweetie, it's mum, I've been held up and can't make it home, don't wait up I might be a while. We will reschedule our dinner of next week okay, bye."

As I listened to the message tears started to prickle in my eyes. She sounded short of breath, fatigued, and she wasn't coming home anytime soon.

I ran to my room and flopped down on the bed, my mood plummeting. I grabbed the phone and dialed Layla, I was going out and partying hard.

"Hey Layla, change of plans, your place, 30 minutes, we are going partying." I said before hanging up, giving her barely enough time t respond.

Walking over to my wardrobe I searched for something to wear. We weren't the most wealthy people around, my closet was proof of that. I settled for a short, black dress, a staple in any girls wardrobe. When I finished my make up I grabbed my keys and left for Layla's house.

It was a good thing Layla didn't live very far away, because I had to walk. Being in our current financial position I couldn't afford my own car, though walking didn't bother me that much, great way to stay in shape.

10 minutes later and I was walking down the lane that led to Layla's house. To be honest, ever since the first time I walked down this lane is given me the creeps. It's the kind of lane where a rapist would jump out and yell 'surprise' and no one would be able to hear your screams. I hurried as fast as I could through the lane, my heels not slowing my down in the slightest. By the time I exited the lane I was almost running. I ran up to Layla's front door eager to get inside and out of the watch full eye of others.

Shortly after I knocked on the door Layla appeared halfway through straightening her hair.

"Hey," I said walking in the door.

"Tell me what's wrong, weren't you having dinner with your mum?" Layla asked looking me in the eye.

"She bailed, yet again. So which is it tonight, Jason's seventeenth or Bridget's house party she throughing while her parents are away?" I asked changing the topic.

"Sorry about your mum, Jason's party for sure, I get enough of Bridget in English class." Layla answered.

We finished getting ready, then got in her car and drove to Jason's house.
