Skeppy rode off on his horse after saying his farewells to the two. Zelk was excited to come home and show his father how little the curse had done. And maybe he could introduce Spifey to his mother, too.
"Zelkam!" a voice cried. Mega? Zelk turned to see the mute.
"Mega? Since when do you talk?"
"Zelk, I'm so sorry," Mega apologized. "I shouldn't have sold you out! I missed you! Please, can you forgive me?"
"Why would you do it?"
"I was scared," the boy confessed. "I liked you too, but I didn't want to admit it to myself. I... I will go with you to the ball." Zelk hesitated a moment.
"I forgive you," he said at last. "But only because going to Jeriques with the matchmaker, Spifey, has gotten me someone I actually want to be with. Someone who doesn't put my life on the line. I'm sorry, Mega, but I just... I don't feel it anymore. I will stay friends with you, but I've got a date already."
"I understand," Mega sighed. He knew he messed up.- -
"Hey, Dad," Zelk cheered, walking into the auditorium where his father was waiting.
"Why would you leave your tower? I was going to have women from all over line up for your hand in marriage, getting it if their kiss saved you. Now it could be too late."
"Dad, I'm cured. Really."
"Oh. Can I meet the girl whom you are to wed?"
"Spifey," Zelk called as the boy walked into view.
"Ivyne never did specify that a woman had to be the one to break the spell," the beaver commented.
"He saved my life, Dad. I know he can't bring me offspring, but give him a chance. He's the reason I'm still alive."
"Perhaps you shouldn't be alive, then! You are no son of mine, and you are no longer permitted in this palace! Get out, you are no longer a prince of this kingdom!" Zelkam shrunk at his father's hurtful words, before taking his boyfriend's hand and leaving.
"Let's go to my mother's. She will welcome you," Zelk said, running down an alleyway familiar to him. He'd often times sneak around and bring his mom groceries, and spend time with her. He knocked on the door to her fairly large house, and she opened."
"Oh my! I've been visited by a prince!" She always did that when he'd come over.
"Actually, I'm not a prince anymore. Dad... disowned me."
"At least you're alive," she said, opening the door for him. "I heard of the terrible curse. But you're alive! I take it that Johanna lifted it?"
"Actually, it turns out I didn't need to go to Jeriques. Spifey here broke the curse. It's sort of the reason Dad wants nothing to do with me."
"So, you've come to live with me! You two stay right here, while I fix up the spare room that I've kept clean in case you ever wanted to come to stay. Oh, and I suppose the guest room can be your boyfriend's, until he gets comfortable enough to sleep in your room. I've been waiting for the day you'd be permitted to come and stay for at least a night. And now you're here," Zelkam's mother rambled on and on as her voice faded, her making the rooms up nice.
"Is this a happy ending?" Spifey asked.
"I don't know. I live with Mom now, and I have you. But, I also had to reject my friend, and I lost my father."
"Then let's call it bittersweet."
"You know, this may be the end of our journey, and the end of my time as prince. But this is also the beginning of a new life I can have with you and Mom. I'm going to request my horse tomorrow, and we can go back to the outskirt town of Manunt, all three of us. We'll have a day out on the town. How does that sound?"
"It sounds lovely," Zelk's mother said. "I'm so happy to finally have you here."-The End-
