I pulled my sleaves over my hands and walked down the stairs. My dad was passed out on the couch and my mom was nowhere to be found. If they saw my wrist i would be in so much trouble i couldn't even explain. They were against me getting a girlfriend.
I opened the front door and headed in the direction of school. I could've taken the school bus but, i didn't want to see anyone.
I hated the fact that i was actually scared to see someone. I had always said no one was as my parents but, now i knew i was wrong.
I saw the school and all the kids filing out of the bus. I had seven minutes until the bell rang. Perfect timing. I picked up my pace and was almost to the school when i heard an unwanted voice. "Hey, Eliot. You didn't take the bus?"
I groaned. A few more steps and i would've been home free. I turned around reluctantly to smile/cringe at Marcus. "No. I wanted to walk and get aome freah air. What about you?" Personally i could care less as to why Marcus hadn't taken the bus but, i was trying to be polite.
He seemed happy i asked and smiled. "My alarm clock didn't go off. I woke up late and missed the bus."
I nodded, completely uninterested in the topic. "Oh. That sucks."
He shrugged. "Yeah but, if it hadn't i wouldn't have gotten to talk to you before school. So, maybe it was a good thing."
I almost rolled my eyes but, resisted the urge. If he thought it was a good thing then let him believe that. "Well, i have to get to my class. Bye." I said as i made a quick escape.
He waved to me as i walked through the doors to my first class. They day was boring. A science test, pop quizz in history, lots of homework. The usual stuff.
I checked the whole area before walking out to the parking lot and making a run for home. I made it there in record time and had to keep myself from slamming and locking the door. I was in sanctuary now. Well, minus the drunk parents walking towards me.
I suddenly wished i had not come home. Anything was better than being with them. Even being with a perverted bully was better.
They came up to me and i could already smell the alcohol on their breath as they glared down at me. "Well, isn't this a surprise." My mother sneered. "Our, good for nothing, son racing home? Maybe he was looking for a beating."
I shook my head, tears already starting to well up. "N-no. I j-just have alot of homework to do." I whimpered.
My mother raised an eyebrow with a shrug. "Well, we could give him a bearing just for fun. What do you say?" My mom asked my dad.
He grinned. "Sure. I have some stuff i could take out on his hyde."
I shook my head again. "Oh, please don't. Please don't hit me."
They just laughed. Then my dad yanked his belt off. I tried to avoid it and run for the stairs but, my mother grabbed my arm. "Hold still, brat."
I closed my eyes just as the belt hit my skin. I screamed and yanked my arm away. "Leave me alone!" I raced up the stairs and into my room. I slammed the door and locked it. My dad had forced the locked door open before and i could hear him getting closer.
I pulled my desk in front of the door and stacked books on it hoping to make it heavier than he could move. He banged on the door. "Open this damn door right now!" He yelled.
I backed up and sat on my bed, facing the door. I pulled my knees to my chest and stared straight ahead. He banged a few more time then it was quiet. I sighed in relief and closed my eyes.
That was the first time i had ever defied my parents. Probably the last time too, knowing whatthey would do when they finally got ahold of me.
*******
I opened my eyes and peeked out from my blankets. The desk was still blocking the door, my body was intact except for the one hit from last night, and i had managed to sleep pretty good dispite all the fear of my parents getting in.
I had school but, i didn't want to leave the house. Well, i did want to leave the house but, i didn't want to leave my room. I pulled myself out of bed and pressed an ear to the door. It was silent but, for all i know, they could be waiting right outside my room, ready to beat me black and blue.
I sighed and walked to my window. I guess i couldn't go to school today. Then i saw Marcus walking past my house. He seemed to be lingering but, soon walked away. As i watched him go i had an idea.
I flung my window open and took a deep breath.
I can't believe I'm doing this.
"Marcus! Hey, wait! Marcus!"
He stopped and turned around, confused to who was calling his name. I waved my arms wildly. "Up here!" He loked at my window. When he sqw me he raised an eyebrow.
"Why are you still in your pajamas?"
"That doesn't matter right now. I'll get dressed and tell you on the way to school of you'll help me."
"Help you with what?"
"Let me get dressed. Stand under my window and wait for me."
He nodded and i pulled my head back inside, closing the window. I threw some clothes on and grabbed my school stuff. Then i opened the window again. "Okay. Help me down."
He looked sceptic. "What?"
I rolled my eyes, frustrated. "Help me down from the window."
"Why don't you just use the front foor?"
"I'll tell you later. Just help me."
He shrugged and help up his hands. I put my legs out the window and leaned on the sill with my stomach. He grabbed my feet and slowly help me lower myself to the ground.
As soon as my feet touched the grass i felt so much better. "Thanks. Now, lets get to school."
He frowned. "Why did you climb out your window?"
"'Cause my parents tried to beat me last night for no reason and i didn't want them to try again this morning."
He stopped. "They did what?!"
I stopped and looked back at him. "Let's just say they hate me and that's the end of it, okay?"
He looked pissed now. "Bastards." I heard him mutter.
I was ignoring him when he asked, "Did they hit you at all?"
I slowed slightly but, kept walking. "Yeah." I said quietly.
"Where?"
I showed him my arm. The one i had blocked the hit with. I don't know why i did. I didn't trust him, i didn't even like him but, i was showing him my biggest secrets.
He looked it over with a frown. "Why do you let them do this to you?"
I glared at him. "What? Do you think i like getting hit so hard my skin burns for days?"
"No but, if you hate it so much why don't you run away?"
I stopped in my tracks. "Because..."
He stared at me. "Because what?"
"Because then i would have no one. Even if they hurt me at least they notice me enough to do that." I swallowed to hold back to tears. "If i left no one would notice me and i really would be invisible to the world."
He was quiet. Then, "That's not true." I glanced at him. He looked really serious. "I would notice you."
