"Yeah. Sean was very happy to hear from me." I told Ethan.
He and I sat in the cemetery in a patch of open space. Spencer curled up in the corner of our blanket. Ethan asked me out to a picnic. The dog park was over run and the closest park was a 40 minute drive. So we decided to respectfully admire the fall leaving from inside the gates of the cemetery.
"That's good. I know you miss him just as much as we all do. God I can't wait for the holidays. He's coming down for them.. right?"
"Yes! He confirmed that." I told him clearly hiding the fact that Seán was coming to visit way before then.
"Good." He smiled and handed me a sandwich. "Turkey and lettuce. You're okay with that, right?"
"Food is food. I'm happy either way. Beats being cooped up in the house." I told him.
"How's your head and ribs?" Ethan asked before taking a huge bite.
"My head seems to be clearing up. Less headaches. But my ribs.. I'm afraid me being this active has made it worse. Mark made an appointment for Thursday to get them checked. I might need a new brace." I sighed.
"Are you in any pain right now?" Ethan looked worried. I couldn't tell him the truth.
"I'm fine. The medication kicked in a few hours ago." I lied.
"Okay. I just want you to start Physical Therapy sooner rather than later. If your ribs get worse, there could be permanent damage."
"Mhm.." I said starring at my half eaten sandwich.
"Baby?"
"Yes?"
"Are you in pain?" He asked sternly. I nodded silently. He kissed my head and packed up all of our things. I was so confused.
"Finish eating. Your body needs the protein and nutrients. I'm not gonna take you home yet. I'll let you relax at my place." He told me.
"Alright." I agreed.
"I'll stop and get you some tea on our way back. Everything will be okay." He reassured me.
"Thank you.."
We finished packing and he walked me to the car. I was a bit slower than usual. The medication wasn't doing jack shit. They're not even numbing the pain even a little bit.
We got to the car and he helped me inside. I groaned quietly as I plopped myself I got the passenger seat. I adjusted the back so that I was situation as upright and straightened out as possible.
"What's wrong?" He asked panicked.
"The medication does nothing.. I'm in so much pain."
"Do you think something like Tylenol would hold you over until Thursday?" He suggested. I shook my head 'no'.
"The medication was meant to be stronger than over the counter shit." I added.
"I'm sorry." Ethan sighed and directed his attention to driving. We pulled out of the parking lot beginning the ride to his house.
Silence filled the car ride for about 10 minutes until Ethan began again. He cleared his throat and slurred over his first few words.
"Call Mark and ask if the doctor has any sooner open spots for you to get checked out. Tell him how you're feeling." His tone was almost demanding. I quickly fiddled my fingers to open my phone and dial Mark's number.
My breath became unsteady. I always got this way when I needed to talk to Mark about pain that I experience. I know he cares enough to go out of his way to make sure I feel normal but it can come off as a bit too aggressive.
"Hello?"
Hearing his voice on the other end made my heart jump high into my chest. I choked and tried my hardest to form practical words from my numb lips.
"H-Hey Mark." I stuttered. Ethan glanced my way concerned.
"Hey... what's the matter?" He asked. I sighed deeply.
"My ribs..they aren't doing too well. I think something might've happened or they're not healing right- I don't know... I'm scared and in so much pain. The antibiotics aren't working and it's so stressful-."
"Hey hey..." Mark cut me out. "Calm down. Do you want me to contact the doctor?"
"Yes.. please. I would do it myself but-."
"No no. I got it. Ethan will take care of you. I'll see if I can get you in late today or early tomorrow. Take it easy, Y/N." He said in a comforting tone before saying goodbye.
I set my phone down and released my tensions. Ethan laid his hand on my thigh, shaking me gently, grabbing my attention.
"See? Not so bad." He kid with a smile.
"Yeah... not that bad." I replied.
- Later That Day -
- At The Doctor's -
Mark stayed in the waiting room due to him not being proper family. Luckily, Ethan was allowed to come into the patient room with me. My nerves were through the roof. I absolutely hate being near a doctor's office.
The nurse lead me to the room. A bed laid in the middle with monitors and devices nearby. A window where you could se the city buildings. The nurse smiled and handed me a robe to change into.
"Sir, could you give her a second to change?" She had asked Ethan to remove himself.
"N-No!" I objected. "He's okay to stay, he's my partner."
"Oh! Alright. Dr. Herman will be right with you." She smiled before closing the door behind her.
"Do you need any help?" He asked. "What do they allow you to keep on?"
"Only my panties. They also gave me socks too." I replied.
"I'll help." Ethan said before gently holding onto the bottom rim of my shirt. I raised my arms as he slowly pulled it off of my torso.
"I can get my pants." I told him. I slid my sweatpants off throwing them to the side.
I looked behind me for a short period of time to see how Ethan was reacting. I had forgotten he hasn't seen me in much more than a tank top and short shorts.
"Can you unclip my bra?" I asked. "If you don't feel comfortable to then that's fine. I can do it."
"N-No!" He replied very flustered. "I got you."
His cold fingertips fiddled with the clips on the back of my bra. I felt the sweet release of freedom for my chest as the bra fell off. I covered my chest with my arm and reached down for the packaged robe.
I managed to slip it on and have Ethan tie the back. I gathered my clothes and set them folded to the side.
"And to think if Mark was here, I would have never been able to do that." He joked.
"We'll be glad he isn't. He'd kill you." I told him.
"Y/N?" He asked.
"Hmm?"
"Can I.. check your stomach near your ribs?"
"Uh sure." I answered lifting up my robe to expose my stomach.
Ethan crouched down a bit to look and see. His eyes widened and he quickly looked to the side in disgust.
"What?!" I asked.
"Nothing... just you're body is bruised horribly."
"What!!" I exclaimed lifting it more to see. I didn't even care if my chest was showing. Well.. maybe Ethan did. He practically fainted. But he was right.
There on my body by my lower ribs were hand sized dark purple bruises. I stumbled back a little, catching myself on the rim of the bed.
"How did this..." I said light headed.
Ethan hurried over and held me close. He lifted me up to the bed with small grunts. I felt my vision go black. Then.. I passed out.
"Y/N?"
