She was fresh out of collage. Kanaya Mayram was training to be a nurse. After four years of the sicking school, she turned twenty-three, and found a rather nice hospital to work at in her home town. Now her home town, Suburb, was fairly small and everyone knew almost everyone else. Her and all of her friends when to the same school, and mostly everyone stayed. When she moved back home she was greeted with Porrim, her sister, Rosa, her mother, Karkat, Vriska, Rose, Gamzee, and many other friends and loved ones came and stayed for a while and helped her put things up as she settled in her fairly average apartment.
She's twenty-four now. She's worked at the same hospital as a nurse for a little more then a year. Today was the annual Blood Drive at Hussie High and other local participants. It lasts for about a week or two and requires nurses to take over-time shifts and get paid a little more. It was a nice setting for Kanaya, outside, away from sick people, easy way to work on designs, and talk to Rose a bit more. She was stationed outside of the main grocery store in town. She mostly stayed sitting in front of the large truck with the one other nurse that came with her, waiting for people to get their blood drawn (this often happened quickly).
It was Kanaya's third out of tenth day working at taking blood from volunteers when she noticed strange things going on. She often heard heartbeats, and grew hungry as blood was abstracted from patients. This went on through the whole day, as she longed to rip a bag of freshly extracted blood open and drink the contents. It felt strange and wrong, yet she smiled and pretended everything was normal as people volunteered their life sources. Every time she saw blood pump through the tube into a hanging bag her heart raced and her hunger urged on. This was a new occurrence, of course. She wanted, no needed it to stop before to drove her insane. Though she didn't do anything about it, she tried to ignore it but failed, and besides that, nothing. She didn't tell anyone what was going on either.
She returned home that night tired and overworked, Rose inquired to her as she sloppily, yet neatly plopped on the couch, "Kanaya, you seem tired... How was work? Is the Blood Drive going well, love?" Kanaya sighed and positioned herself so she laid, her head in Rose's lap and her legs curled under her, pushing against the arm rest. "Oh Rose, it was hard today...," She quickly thought up an excuse, "There was volunteer after volunteer at the Blood Drive. Then when I returned to the hospital nearly every doctor needed help with every patient." Rose nodded with understanding, kissing her gently on the forehead before getting them each a dinner of a simple salad with Rosemary chicken. It bothered Kanaya that she lied to Rose, well partially lied. She wasn't tired from the Blood Drive or the patients at the hospital. She was tired from all the blood she somehow urged to drink. She didn't know why she didn't tell the one person she trusted the most. It just didn't feel right to tell her, it didn't feel okay to tell anyone. But, she knew she would soon have to tell someone.
Days passed, and hunger pained Kanaya's stomach, mind, and body as she saw and craved blood. The blood drive was almost over, it was the seventh out of tenth day and she was taking the afternoon shift, having the privilege to close the truck and drive it back to the hospital after everyone left. It was more crowded and there were three other nurses accompanying her as she worked. She started to sweat as she saw all the blood surrounding her while she sat with a volunteer, asking his name and blood type, barely caring, but still smiling, being nice. After about an hour of working, an unexpected character stopped by. Karkat Vantas, a fairly close friend of Kanaya's. She haven't told anyone where she was working for the blood drive or when except Rose, and not a lot of her friends came and donated blood outside the grocery store. So, it was surprising that Karkat showed up, he was looked pretty happy when he saw Kanaya, and when he thought she saw him he looked away with a small blush. You see, he's had a crush of the designer girl, ever since middle school, everything kicked in and he fell in love. He got majorly disappointed when he started high school, seeing Kanaya dating Rose. Karkat never cared though, he was just happy she was happy dating other girls, and she deserved that happiness. When he saw Kanaya at the blood drive he instantly asked if she could take his blood. He approached the counter on the truck, and spoke to the strangely happy nurse. "Hello sir! Are you donating blood today? Or perhaps you have a child or someone with you who wishes to give blood and your just here for moral support!" She started to giggle almost uncontrollably. Karkat rolled his eyes and thought,"What a fucking giddy idiot! Is she still fucking laughing? God that is annoying!" He sighed and rubbed the side of his head, obviously annoyed. "Okay, Nurse To-Happy-To-Fucking-Care, I want to donate some fucking blood, but here's the thing. You see that shitty nurse over there." He pointed to Kanaya, past her, "Yeah, I want to fucking talk to her. So, I need you, Mrs. Happy Shits to get her to take my blood. Ya' got it shit stain?" The nurse's mouth fell open as she nodded slowly and led him to Kanaya, who just got done with another volunteer. She shakes slightly and said, "H-hey Kanaya here's the next volunteer..." She sighed as the other nurse left, she was looking down at a clipboard changing the page and Karkat sat down. Kanaya, without looking up, asked, "Alright sir, what is your...." She slowly looked up and saw him. She laughs a little under her breathe and looked at him, "You're name just happens to be Karkat Vantas." She smiled and gave him a half hug over the chair. "How are you, darling? I haven't seen a nice man in a while. We should talk more." He smiled slightly and hugged back, "Oh, I've been alright. How's you and Rose?" She smiled and quickly stabbed the needle into his arm, as he winced "We've been well, haven't gotten to talk a lot, with me working at the hospital, of course...." She zoned out. Thinking of how she lied to her love, focusing on her thoughts when she suddenly screamed, smacking her hands over her ears, forcing her head in her lap, as she heard several overlapping heartbeats. One of Karkats, and five more of other volunteers' and nurses'. Everyone stared at her, all their looks surprised, laced with worry. Except Karkat, still having the needle in his arm, he patted her on the back softly and asked as quiet as he could without whispering, "Are you okay, Kan?" Kanaya looked up, greeted by a worried Karkart, and looks of shock through the large vehicle. She sat up straight and placed her hands in her lap, "I-I'm fine, Karkat... Don't worry...." The nurse at the counter walked over, looking rudely at Karkat, looking worried for Kanaya. "Kanaya, are you alright? Do you need anything?" She smiled slightly, trying to hide how insane she felt inside, "I'm fine, I-I just don't feel well... I thought I heard something..." Looks were exchanged around the vehicle for a second before everyone silently went back to working. Karkat smiled at her as she started to work at taking his blood again. "I am sorry. I must have freaked you out." Karkat sat back as blood flowed aout of his arm, "It's fine. I'm just worried about you..." Kanaya's hungered urged as se watched Karkat's blood flow into the bag. "I'm just fine. How about you meet me here at about seven o'clock? I have to close up and it would be a pleasure if you helped me." He nodded as she stopped the blood flow and pulled the needle out of his arm. "Alright, I'll swing around here at seven." She asked him his blood type before letting him on his way. She took the bag of blood sticking the sticker with his blood type and name on it.
The clock struck six fifty-five and everyone left except a exhausted Kanaya. She sat back in a chair and rested her head on her hand, sighing, knowing Karkat would be there soon. She smelled blood from the cold closet. She stood up wandering to the freezer, grabbing a random bag and twisting off the lid. She started to sweat as a million thoughts raced through her head. She didn't want to drink it, but everytime she even saw the deep red liquid her stomach growled. She pressed the bag against her lips and sucked out the liquid, almost moaning as the pleasurable taste ran down her throat. She unknowingly blocked out all sounds and thoughts as blood ran down her throat. The door to the truck opened as Karkat stepped in, stepping back as he saw Kanaya drinking from the bloody pouch. He straightened out and carefully approched her. He put his hand gently on her shoulder. She turned her head slowly, blood dripping out of her mouth, looking at him sadly. "I-I'm sorry...." He slowly grabbed the bag and got her to sit down. He quickly hung the bag from a line and sat down next to her. "Kan.... Why were you drinking fucking blood?" He was visably shaking, as she burst into tears, laying her head in her lap. He put his hand on her back to try to comfort her as they sat in the empty truck. They stayed in the truck for half an hour as Kanaya explained every urge, hunger, and sound she heard. She sxplained how she thought drinking the source of her pain would end it, and it did. Karkat sat next to her, supporting her, doing his best to make her feel better every time she started to cry. When she was done explaining everything Karkat grabbed the bag of blood and poured it out the door, while Kanaya looked at him ashamed. "If you're craving blood it should be fresh..." He sat back down next to her, pulling up his sleeve, offering his wrist. "K-Karkat I can't... It would be wrong...." He looked annoyed and pushed his wrist in front of her mouth. "Kan you need to fucking drink this shit, and from what you said I have a feeling it would be better fresh. Just fucking drink" She looked at him, and swallowed as she pressed her lips to his wrist and bit down, groaning as she felt fangs grow from her gums. She sucked on his arm for several minutes before she pulled away wipeing her mouth. Karkat helped her clean up around the truck and drive it back to the hospital. Karkat offered to let her drink from him when ever she needed. She politely declined and said she could handle it on her own.
Kanaya returned home to find a sleeping Rose with no idea why she was late. Kanaya slipped into bed next to her, kissing her head as she drifted off to sleep.
