Are children happy because they are selfish? That is, they (more often than not) care about only themselves. However, once taken on the burden of fully understanding love, lust, and people - often they become null. In other words, they enter adulthood.
Adults are aware, introspective, accountable and responsible; children are not. Adults must face the chaos that is society, they can never escape it for, the sole fact of acquiring a mortgage immediately reprieves the individual of any freedom. Children do not have a mortgage, they do not pay taxes - they are happy, they are unburdened, they are free. They are, in turn, selfish.
