Hey everyone! This is my very first story, so let me know what you guys think.
"Jenna!"
I snapped out of my daze and looked up at my teacher, Miss Shrean, who was looking at me with her arms crossed and eyes narrowed.
"Yeah?" I asked, still kind of out of it.
"Thank you for volunteering to go next," she said with a sarcastic smile.
I groaned and got up out of my seat, taking my paper with me. When I reached the front of the room, I cleared my throat and began reading my paper.
My name is Jenna. I was born in this town and have lived here my whole life. I've always wanted to move. I mean, I have nothing against our country; in fact, I love Aqua. I admire King Nicolas and Queen Rosaline, and I'm sure their kids Nathan and Madeline are great as well. But, something's always been missing. I want to travel, and I want to find that something. I want to experience the fresh, crisp, and cool air in the country Aenti. I want to see the massive mountain range in Terae. I want to meet the fiery and fierce people of Ignia. I want to go on adventures.
So far, my life's been pretty boring. My mom Tasha and my dad Jeff raised me. Growing up, I was always hanging out with my dad. He was my idol, and he still is. He put me in classes for close-combat, horseback riding, and fencing. We would always run together, and he made me into the athlete that I am today. I owe my varsity captain status in cross-country and track to him. On the other hand, I never got along with Tasha. I hated all the girly things she would try to impose on me. We always clashed, and since my dad died, it's only gotten worse. She's also the reason why I'm in this stupid class. She thinks a class called All About Me is going to help me find myself. That's bull-
"That's enough!" yelled Miss Shrean, her face the shade of a tomato. Before she got the chance to yell at me, the bell rang and I hurried out smirking. I wasn't usually a bad student. But Miss Shrean is a bitch, and if her goal is to make us suffer, then my goal is to make her suffer just as much. I'm not a great student either though. I get mostly B's and C's, except in PE, which is obviously an A. I typically just go through class undetected, I mean, there's nothing special about me.
I sighed in relief as I walked out of the hell that is school. Unlike the rest of the seniors in this class, I didn't have a car. My house was about a mile away from the school, and I had to walk. During the actual school year, my best friend Sara drove me home. Sara is my only true friend and it's so weird because we are opposites. Sara has stick-straight blonde hair, blue-gray eyes, porcelain skin, and stands at a meager five feet. She has never had to work for anything in her life. Her parents spoil her with the latest clothes and accessories. She has guys falling over their feet for her curvaceous body.
I have dark brown wavy hair and stand at five foot seven. I have a more athletic figure with a slight tan due to being outside often. Sometimes, I envy Sara's double D's, but then I remember how much easier it is to run with boobs the size of a C. As far as my eyes go, I hate them. They make me feel like a freak of nature. Naturally, they're violet. However, I wear brown contacts so nobody knows my true eye color. I've always felt like an outcast. Sara says it's because I don't make enough effort to be friendly to people, but everyone in high school is so annoying.
I came out of my thoughts as the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. Something was off. While the silence of my small town usually calmed me, today, it felt eerie. The streets were desolate, but I had a suspicion that I was being watched. When I turned around, the only thing that I saw was the big oak tree that I just walked past. It stood towards the side of a park, near the sidewalk. I smiled to myself, remembering climbing the big oak tree when I was younger. What I didn't remember, though, was the tree looking so creepy.
I dismissed my thoughts, shaking my head at my paranoia. Turning back to the sidewalk, I continued towards my house. Two steps later, I heard a rustle. Goosebumps appeared on my arms and I shivered. Whipping my head around, I stared down the branches of the tree, eyes narrowing. When I finally saw the intruder, I gasped. Its head was cocked to the side, almost in amusement.
It was a bird. To be more specific, it was a raven. Black as night, the bird had beady eyes that seemed to stare straight through me. It cawed and spread its wings to take off in flight. Its wingspan looked five feet long. In case you don't know, ravens aren't that big. It circled in the air a couple of times before leaving.
I hurried home after the encounter, but I couldn't shake off the bad feeling. I silently cursed myself for being shaken up, partially blaming Tasha for all her superstitious beliefs. Ravens were a bad omen, and for some reason, I felt like I had just received the mother of all bad omens.
