The next morning, we got out of the car, and walked to the office. Luke welcomed me back, put his arm around me and gave me slight push in the direction of the door. “Good luck Sam! See you at lunch.” My dad waved me off.
Luke said that I had to start at the kiddies’ rides and work my way up. I laughed at the thought of this. I would be working with dizzy kids the whole day. When we got there I saw the fit figure from yesterday. Luke must have noticed me looking at the person, because he then said “Taylor, come over here.” To which the figure turned around and started making his way towards me. As he walked I couldn’t help notice how green his eyes were. His brown hair lifting slightly as the breeze blew through it. He stood right before my eyes, his mouth corners turning up. “H...hi.” I stuttered, “My name’s Sam.” He let out a slight grunt, as if trying not laugh at me. I felt like a complete idiot at that moment.
“Hey, Sam. I’m Taylor. Summer job? He asked. I nodded a quick yes and looked back at Luke, my eyes begging to go somewhere else before I say anything stupid. “Better get back to work then. Sam, if you need help, ask Taylor. He’s been coming every summer for three years now. He knows his way around.” Luke said leaving me standing there. “Well,” I said “Nice to meet you. Better get going.” And I turned on me heel to walk away.
At lunch I went back to the office to get my lunch. My dad once again being absent. He went down to the café to buy lunch. I was sitting on his chair when Taylor walked past the office again. He stopped and came back. “Oh, Hi there Sam! Sitting in the boss’s chair then?” He asked in a rather cocky tone. “Yeah, I’m kind of the boss’s daughter.” I replied laughing. Taylor came in smiling. “Well, that’s interesting Sam.” He said picking up a frame which had in it a photo of me when I was 11 years old. “I have always wondered what this little girl’s name was. Not really a little girl though.” He said holding the frame so that I could see the picture. I could feel my face turning a bright shade of read. “That photo was taken about 6 years ago, Taylor.” I said in a sarcastic tone. He looked up at me, and said “Well I can see that Samantha.” He chuckled as he said my name. My heart stood still. How did he know my full name? He must’ve known what I was thinking, or he just read my puzzled face. “Your dad has told the whole office about you. He’s told everyone how much you hate being called Samantha.”
I know my dad only said that because he meant well, but in a sense I’m still slightly mad at him.
As Taylor walked out of the office. I couldn’t help ogling. I finished my lunch and started making my way to the ride I was controlling. My day so far had been rather interesting. I had adults coming on my ride telling me to make it faster. I simply nodded my head, but didn’t turn up the speed one notch. I thought they were silly. Why come on a kiddies ride when you want to go fast?
The park was closing down, so I shut down the ride. I saw Taylor walking up to me. Running his hand through his hair he looked at me and said “How’d your first day go Sammy?”
Sammy? I thought. Who did this guy think he was? “It went well, thank you.”
“Well, that’s good. Well, I’ll see you tomorrow then.
Oh, and listen, you need to smile more. Pretty girls like you have to smile. It’s law” he said walking to his car.
When I got home, I looked at my phone and saw that I had a new text message from Liza.
“Hey Sam. How has work been? You should see all the cute guys here! Xx Be good! “
Liza was always looking out for cute guys. I never really noticed them, because to be honest, they turned out being players anyway. “Samantha!” I could hear my mother calling e from downstairs. I got up from my bed and went to the kitchen. “Yes, mom?” I said in a flat tone. “I was wondering how it went today? Have you made any new friends?”
