Where I am in two places at the same time

"The one thing I don't understand is who or what left the message," Edgar said.

We talked about my dream all morning. I went through the details, though it filled me with shame to repeat how my father had betrayed his brother.

Edgar said that Nathan couldn't have known the Awakened would want the mirror for themselves. And even if he had known, Edgar said, it would have been better that way instead of letting the object fall in Sam's hands.

But the thing we both silently agreed on was that none of us would have done the same. So, what did that make my father? Not a bad person, but someone very different from me.

"I just hoped finding out more things about my parents would make me feel closer to them, not the other way around," I said miserably, ignoring Edgar's concerns.

"I know," he replied. "I can't even begin to imagine how you feel. But perhaps your mother was very much like you. Maybe Nathan did all of this behind his girlfriend's back."

Despite trying to keep my cool, I shivered and became very pale.

"My dad would have betrayed three people, then" I pointed out.

"Three?"

"At the very least. He betrayed me too. Telling those people to put me in the human realm... well, we both how my life was like there. And doing so, he could have let Sam succeed."

Edgar knew better than to argue with that.

"But, back to the piece of paper," he said stubbornly. "You'll have to admit it's weird. It could have been written by anyone or anything..."

"Well, we already know Jake is cursed, and he has become capable of doing spells in places that were far away from him. Of course, scratch that. We're in this strange dimension of which I haven't understood anything yet..."

I smacked my forehead. "I know what spell I'll be working on when I have mastered the telekinesis!"

Edgar almost spilled the cup of tea he was drinking from.

"Don't you have anything better to do? Your magic is seriously ill, and you're draining yourself by having nightmares that tell you about the past nightly. Why do you have to try all these new spells?"

"First off," I said. "The dream about your past was not a nightmare. Then, each of my experiments has a different reason behind it. The telekinesis was to prove written words amplified spells and could make you create new ones. And it worked. The second experiment will be trying, with the help of the Runes, to write on walls of rooms where I'm not. Kind of like astral projection. And this experiment, my literary nemesis, is to prove that if I could do it, Jake had done it."

"Maybe Jake being cursed makes him more powerful than you are," Edgar commented bitterly.

"Maybe," I said darkly. "But isn't the thing that's ruining my energy also making it stronger?"

"But really. Teasing aside, what do you think about my idea?" I added softly.

Edgar did not reply at first. He had turned an unflattering shade of green.

"I support you," he said. "But I really wished you wouldn't drain yourself that much."

I grinned at him. "You can stay by my side, check if everything's alright."

"You should ask Nia to check out on you," he said. "You know that if you won't feel well, there isn't much that I can do."

"Nonsense," I replied stubbornly. "You knew a lot about healing magic. You might have had a shift in your powers, but your brain cells are still there."
