After Yana had rushed on down the hall, leaving me stood wondering what to do next, a girl soon approached me with an expression of inquisition upon her face.
"Hey, Roxy Ambers, right?" she asked me.
"That's the one," I said.
She nodded at that, seeming pleased by this fact.
"Thought so," she said, "What do you study?" she asked me.
"Music, mostly. I dot around between classes, though. You?" I asked her.
"Physics," she said, with a small smile.
Wow. She must be smart, then. Sciences had often been the absolute bane of my life back in secondary school. To put it in the lightest manner possible, I despised them. I supposed the abundance of mathematical equations that could be found in such subjects had thoroughly turned me away from them.
Usually, small talk was fine but my brain was full of too many questions to leave it at that. I soon asked the girl stood before me what her name was.
"Gabbie Walker," the girl replied simply. "So, I heard that you were going to take part in the Band War," she said.
I sighed. Another reminder that I still needed to find our fourth and final bandmate. Damn it. In the words of King Julien- how long was this going to take?
"Yes. We need one more member, though-" I started to say, until Gabbie interjected.
"I was leading up to that. Do you need a drummer?" she asked me.
I felt my eyes increase slightly in size, due to my sheer surprise.
"You mean...would you like to join the band? We would love a drummer, I'm sure," I said.
A pianist, two singers and guitar players and one drummer. Perfect.
"Uh, is Ellen Page a lesbian? Of course, I would love to join your band!" Gabbie said with a smile.
"Nice reference," I said, as I felt the corners of my mouth twitch up, too.
"It's easy to spot another bi when you're really looking," Gabbie told me, as she glanced towards my ring and cuffed jeans.
"Damn. I thought I looked straight," I said, "It was scary."
"Well, I'm glad to dispel those fears," Gabbie told me, with a slight chuckle in her amusement.
Gabbie and I soon began to walk down the hallway of the university together, and I realised that there were still a bunch of questions that I wanted to ask her. More than anything else, though, I felt relief. I had always been optimistic that we would find our final band member but now that time had finally arrived! I was also fairly convinced that three out of our four band members were raging bisexuals, so that was something else to keep in mind. I hoped that wouldn't lead to drama down the line. It was always great to find people that you could bond with, though. I was so glad that Gabbie had happened to walk down the hall in the very same moment that I was beginning to lose some hope. It was as if she had answered a miracle.
"So, you're a physics major and you play the drums, you seem pretty practical," I observed.
Gabbie gave a nod at that and smiled slightly, as though pleased that someone had shown a subtle admiration for her achievements.
"Yeah. My dad used to be a carpenter before the business blew over. I helped him out a lot," she said.
"Shoot. I'm sorry to hear about your father's business," I said sympathetically, then.
Gabbie gave a dismissive shake of her head.
"Naw. It's okay. He sells and manufactures car parts now," she explained. "And you have to be realistic. No job lasts forever...Nothing lasts forever," Gabbie said.
I supposed that she was right. These things that wouldn't last forever included university, I thought bittersweetly, but I had a good feeling that it was going to be a good year ahead. After all, the Band War was going to come around soon enough and we were going to win it. I would make sure of it.
"Anyway, here's my number," Gabbie said, as she passed me a piece of paper. "Don't lose it. I know that no one is immune to the bisexual clumsiness. Speak soon, Roxy," she added, with a smile.
"See you later, Gabbie," I replied, as I smiled back at her and observed her walk on down the hall.
I turned to head to the library but as soon as I did, someone emerged right in front of me. Fortunately, I didn't jump out of my skin.
"Who was that?" came the bubbly voice of Yana.
"She was our fourth and final band member, Yana Marques. You're welcome," I said with a grin.
"No freaking way! You're amazing, Roxy Ambers!" Yana said, with a huge grin.
I felt my cheeks flush slightly at her compliment, though it really did mean a lot to me.
"So, what's she going to play? I'll need to know. I'm making merch and posters as we speak," she said, as she glanced down to the designer app on her phone.
She really didn't waste any time.
"She'll be our drummer," she said.
Yana grinned at that.
"Epic," she said, "I don't know about the background on this poster," she added, with a sigh. She turned to me and showed me her phone, "What do you think, Roxy?" she asked me.
My eyes glanced at the yellow background and almost winced at how bright it was.
"Tone it down a little. Make it stand out but...you don't want people to literally be slapped in the face with it," I told her.
Yana gave an understanding murmur at that.
"Alright, stand out but not smack you in the face bright...got it," she said, with a smile, as she quickly changed the details of the poster. "Sorry, you'll find I can be a bit of a perfectionist at times," she said, "My aunt wanted me to make her a wedding cake at one point. It took me four attempts before I was even slightly happy with it," Yana explained.
"No, I completely get that. We'll do this, Yana, our band is going to be immaculate," I said decisively, as I gave her my genuine reassurance.
