- Backstory -
He quickly put on his plague doctor mask, rushing to his fathers side.
"Father, I-" He paused, not knowing what he could say, there was just so much that could be said, but he didn't know where to start.
"Son, there's no need to worry-" His father would say, but start to cough up blood, which interrupted him.
Jasper quickly supported him so that he didn't fall, grabbing a small patch of fabric for him to cough into.
"I know you'll do wonderful things, you own our farm now, and you must take care of your mother and sisters for me, alright?" He'd ask genuinely, grabbing ahold of Jaspers hand.
Jasper teared up, not only because he was losing his father, but because he has rarely ever said anything so caring, putting such an important responsibility on his shoulders.
"Father, I'm sure you can pull through, there's no need to say such things." He would say, almost choking on his words as he tried to keep his tears from falling.
He'd shake his head in response, a smile on his face as an attempt to lessen Jaspers sadness "No son, now you must carry on what I've taught you, alright?" He'd ask, resting his other hand on Jaspers that he had still been holding.
"Y-Yes, father." Jasper would sniffle, nodding tearfully.
"Now please, go see your mother and sisters, I would rather you not see this." He'd sigh, laying down so that he looked at the ceiling.
Jasper felt his heart drop in the moment, realizing that even his father knew that he would die soon.
"Father please, I-"
"No son, no." He'd sigh, silence washing over the two of them "Please, listen to me."
Jasper would gulp, his tears almost ready to burst, as much as it hurt his eyes to try holding them back anymore "I love you, father." He'd say as he turned away.
His father even started to tear up "I love you too, son." He'd say in somewhat of a mumble, his voice breaking.
Jaspers heart would break as he heard his fathers voice that way. He then would walk out, shakily shutting the door behind him as he felt a cold rush run through his body. He wondered if he should go back in and comfort him, if his father would actually be okay and pull through, or if he can even handle any of the responsibilities he had been given.
His hand would shakily hover over the doors handle, though it would drop as he chose to listen to his fathers wish.
Later that night, his father was pronounced dead, where he was then sent out for burial in a nearby small cemetery.
Jasper sat with his mother, his unusually tall height for his time making him tower over her even then.
She cried in his arms, holding him tightly as his shaking voice whispered words of comfort in her ear. His sisters sat by his side, some sobbing while others drowned in the sadness of their own silence.
