Myth statement: Someone with OCD will have the same obsessions their entire life.
To relieve anxiety triggered by obsessions, people with OCD indulge in compulsions. Over time, both compulsions and obsessions will shift.
And as symptoms change, the underlying feelings, fear and anxiety, remain the same. A individual with OCD tends to experience fears about a popular topic in most cases. These themes may be influenced by age, history, and life experiences.
A 12-year-old with OCD, for instance, may be haunted by thoughts of dying from their parents. The same individual may be afraid of the loss of their spouse at 25. The particular concern has improved, but not the underlying fear (losing a loved one). It may also change the compulsive behaviors used to alleviate anxiety.
