Hospital Gala - Alice’s Diary

Dear Diary,

I’ve been very busy this week. Carlisle’s hospital is having a gala or ball, and we have no choice but to attend. So, I’ve been measuring my family, going to meetings with dressmakers and shoemakers, jewellers, and hair stylists about the new styles. I will not allow my family to look out of date, if you understand what I’m saying. Edward is being a bit sour about going to it at all, as all the young women have taken quite a shine to him, as he is the only single man left in our family of seven. I’ve been looking into the future more often now, because of that vision. Curiosity is getting the better of me, and I’m dying to know who the girl is. No pun intended on the dying part. She must be really something to turn my Edward’s head. He’s rather picky.

Anyway, back to the ball. It turns out it is an annual event, and is called ‘Fork’s Snowflake Hospital Ball’. It’s held in the community hall, as it is the only space in town that is large enough to host such a high number of guests. Esme and I wanted to take part in the Ball committee but we weren’t allowed. Edward told us we were supposed to lay low, and be inconspicuous. We won’t ever be like any normal family, so I don’t see why I can’t have a little bit of enjoyment, and I happen to enjoy decorating for parties. Plus, it would have looked much better if Esme and I were in charge.

On the night, I was flitting around like a buzzing bee. I was all over the place getting people ready. Emmett refused to get ready until I gave him a rematch arm wrestle. Needless to say, I let him win so I could continue with my party preparations. Emmett satisfied, I settled my focus on his other half. Rosalie’s dress was finished today, and so far she hadn’t seen my designs. I took in the box that held the dress into her and Emmett’s bedroom, and placed it on her bed in front of her.

“You mean I can see it now?” She asked, looking at the box in anticipation. I gestured to the clean, white box silently, just waiting for her reaction. Her eyes widened as she saw it, and carefully lifted it out of the box. I thought it suited her personality. It was a fiery red, and made of pure silk. The dress hugged all her curves, and the skirt went all the way down to the floor. The neckline was a bit risqué as it plunged down into a v-shape. All eyes will be on her beautiful face anyway, as I’m her make-up and hair technician tonight. Her golden locks would stay down but I was going to curl them slightly, and her make-up would be minimalist, just some rouge lipstick and kohl on her eyes.

Happy with my masterpiece and after Rosalie thanked me, I headed to my next objective. Esme. I had her dress in my hands. It was her favourite colour purple, but a light lavender so it didn’t over power her body. Our Esme does look rather delicate. The dress was a goddess dress, it hung from Esme’s frame, draped across her body, folding into pleats at the waist. The skirt fell to her ankles, and her petit feet were slipped into flats. Her beautiful, caramel hair I pulled up and pinned to her skull, leaving some strands to frame her face.

My work was done. Esme didn’t like make-up and it was unnecessary anyway, so her beautiful face was fresh and product free.

I went to get myself ready. I was wearing a loosely hung drape-dress. It was one piece of material, that is held up by two plaited straps. It’s a midnight black, and looked amazing on if I do say so myself. My short hair, I pulled up into a bun, and let my long-ish fringe frame my face. I put on some black heels, and went to make sure the guys had managed to get themselves ready. If they weren’t I think I’ll finally snap and kill them all. I immediately thought of ways to cover my tracks, and thought fire would suffice.

“We’re ready Alice, please don’t murder us!” Edward said, from his bedroom.

“Oh really, Edward, are you guys ready to my standards or yours?”

He laughed. I’m not joking mind-reader! I thought to him. He just chuckled again.

“We’re leaving in five minutes, because I can hear our car arriving.”

Jasper and I had to hunt several times before tonight’s festivities. Jasper is still struggling with our diet. Due to his previous…upbringing he is only now realizing how he can deny his thirst. He never had to when he was with Maria.

Jasper hates how ‘weak’ he is. He cried to me last night, he had caught the scent of a human whilst we were out in the woods, and had pursued it. I followed him, and tried to stop him. He threw me into the nearest tree, and only then realized it was me.

He broke down into tears, and apologised over and over again. It broke my heart to see him like that, so I’m keeping both eyes on him all night.

We all climbed into the car and off we went to complete torture. It would be easier if I actually liked the humans in this town, but they are so judgemental and ignorant. They don’t really understand why we live so isolated,  and keep ourselves to ourselves. We don’t want to be found out, they’ll hunt us down if they find out we’re different, that we’re vampires. Our family would have to move away, far away and to be perfectly honest we love being able to go out during the day, pretty much all the time. Sure we’re not allowed to go to La Push to the beach, but we have other options and places like that to go.

Entering the hall, the loud business conversations, the old women gossiping, the band and even the children playing and running around, all sound and movement cut out. I heard people gasp, as we tried smiling at them. I knew we were beautiful, but seriously, we couldn’t have quite this effect. All eyes were on us, and I know we all must have felt uncomfortable, as I felt a wave of serenity wash over me. Jasper gave me a forced, small smile and I could tell he wasn’t coping well. I pulled him into the huge space which was a dance floor I presumed. Someone thoughtfully started playing again, and we twirled around the floor in time with the music. A waltz came on, and my family danced around everyone, who stood watching in silent awe.

Jasper survived the night, as did all the humans. We left quite early as Jasper was getting rather uncomfortable and uneasy. The ride home was deathly quiet, no one feeling the need to fill the silence.

However, when we got inside I begged Edward to play for Jasper and I, as I was still in the dancing mood. Jasper happily obliged and we danced long into the night, even after Edward had stopped.

Talk to you soon,
