"Im Changkyun. Not only you came in late today, but you're also not concentrating on my lesson. Is math not interesting enough for you? With a grade like that, it should be."
Changkyun's head shot up at the mention of his name to meet the teacher's eyes, his face red from the embarrassment. "I'm sorry, miss, it won't happen again."
"It better not, or no university will accept you if you don't raise your grade." Someone snickered in the back rows.
Changkyun just pointed his head to his notebook again, forcing himself not to let his classmates know he was upset. The last thing he wanted to happen was everyone seeing him cry because his math teacher said some petty insult – which, by the way, was illegal. Not that that evil woman cared.
He forced himself to pay attention and take notes of what the teacher said. She was explaining something related to equations and graphics but it seemed like the continuation of previous lessons, which were unknown to him. Also why were there so many letters? Wasn't it supposed to be maths? That looked way out of his league.
When the lesson ended he dragged himself out to go sit in a corner in the cafeteria at lunch. He wasn't in the mood for any of his friends' bullshit – he never was, actually.
What was worse was that he didn't even have anything that good to eat, because he had to pack his lunch himself and he almost had forgotten, so he only had a damn sandwich.
He looked over the mass of his schoolmates while munching on his sad sandwich. Everyone was chatting loudly, some studying, some giving each other notes or test answers, food was passed around the tables to be shared with friends. However he didn't feel that much lonely – at least not yet.
He looked around for a familiar face. Between the mass of strangers, people he barely knew, middle school crushes and occasional friends or acquaintances, he couldn't find the person he was looking for. He wondered where the hell Kihyun studied to never see him around. He finished the damn sandwich, packed his stuff up and got up to leave. Someone laughed while he passed their table to leave the shitty school cafeteria. He paid it no attention and headed for the door, throwing the napkin he had used in the trash on his way out.
He walked away from the loud room, not knowing exactly where he was going. In fact that was the opposite direction from his history class, which was where he should have headed, but he didn't care. He wanted somewhere that was silent, and possibly didn't laugh at him.
He ended up in another wing of the building, in the arts department. He never went there, as he didn't have any classes of that kind, but here he was. He quickly slipped in an empty classroom and sat down in a corner. He stared at his hands on the desk, which was all covered in little notes and exchanges between the student and their desk mate, and then sighed and grabbed his math book from his bag.
He found the page the teacher had explained that day, stared at the absolute nonsense and turned the pages back until he found something he knew, and started from there. He reread the pages with the explanations a few times, then chose an exercise and started writing it down. It was going smoothly at first, but then he hit a point where he had no idea what to do. He tried to remember something, he even went back on the book to find some explanation, but he couldn't find anything, so he just crossed it out and moved on to another one.
He started to get slightly discouraged after the fourth equation he couldn't do.
"You can't add those two, they have a different unknown. That's probably why you got stuck." a voice made Changkyun flinch in surprise and tear his eyes away from the math to look at the person who had approached him.
