“So…how do I do this?” I asked nervously.
Yuki sat across the clearing, eating an apple, just sitting back and watching me. “Concentrate.” He said.
“On the tree?”
He sighed. “No. Concentrate on making the lightning bolt come out of your hand.”
“Then how am I going to hit the tree with it if I’m not concentrating on that too?”
“Fine. Concentrate on the tree too if you think you’re smart enough.”
I huffed at him and outstretched my hand towards the tree, concentrating on both it and the lightning bolt. Nothing happened.
“Yuki, it’s not working.”
“Concentrate.”
I stared harder at the tree and tuned out everything else. My vision narrowed.
Nothing.
“I can’t do this!” I yelled in frustration.
He chuckled. “Yes, you can.”
I put my hand down and looked at him. “If I could do this then I would have done it already.”
“That’s your problem.”
“What’s my problem?”
“You don’t believe you can do it.”
“Of course I do.” I protested.
“No. You really don’t. That’s why you haven’t done it already.”
“Well, if you believe so much, then why don’t you do it? After all, you can breathe underwater.”
“Okay.” Yuki got up and took my place in front of the tree. He looked over and smiled cockily at me. I rolled my eyes. He focused back on the tree and outstretched his hand. A few moments went by.
“Yuki, nothing-“ I was interrupted by a loud clap of thunder and a bright blue bolt that flew out of his hand. I screamed.
Then there was silence.
Yuki burst out laughing. “Ha! You’re scared of lightning!”
“No! I-I just was caught by surprise!”
“Right. So, you’ve seen me do it. Now you.”
“But, you’re different…you’re like…a guy.”
“That’s your excuse. I’m a guy?”
“Yeah, you have more adrenaline and stuff…” Silence.
What kind of silly, messed up-“
“It’s not an excuse-“
“-Sexist, ridiculous, nonsensical-“
“Yuki, that’s enough, I-“
“-Petty, despicable, irresponsible-“
“OKAY!” I yelled desperately. Yuki crossed his arms. “I’ll do it…just lay off.”
“Alrighty then.” He sat back across the field. “Do it.”
I focused on the tree and outstretched my hand towards. I breathed deep, balancing all my energy to the lightning bolt and the tree.
Then it happened. Thunder sounded through the place, making my ears ring, and a bright white bolt shot from my hand, striking a line of trees. I watched as they all started to fall, like dominoes, flinching every time one hit the ground.
