Hugo looked out the window dejectedly and withheld a sigh. Victor had to go into the city and wouldn't be back until tomorrow morning. He hadn't said anything but that he had business to attend to. (He's doing illegal shit but Hugo don't know that).
Hugo knew he shouldn't be so upset, he was CUP kid for heavens sake. He was used to people coming in and out of his life. But victor was different, he was with him all day, for six days a week. He had grown accustomed to to his soothing words and gentle bouts of affection, and now he was going to be gone for a whole day.
Hugo hated to admit it but he had a bit of separation anxiety. When he found out victor was going to be leaving he had had a little meltdown, well, ok a big meltdown. He had started crying and it had taken victor a good two hours of rocking and bouncing while cooing at him and the promise of calling him before bed to finally get him to calm down.
Though Hugo couldn't come, Victor refused to allow him to stay alone. So Luca was coming from the city to watch him. He had met them a few times and they seemed nice enough. But unfortunately that wasn't enough to ale Hugo's attachment to victor.
He had woken up this morning to Luca having tea with him in the sitting room. After preparing some apple slices for himself and a plain black coffee for victor he joined them. "So Hugo, how have you been" Luca asked calmly. "O-oh fine, a-and you". They looked at their tea wistfully for a second before answering, "Oh very well thank you, I look forward to spending time with you. Victor speaks very highly of you.". Hugo blushed a little "thank you".
There was a bit more small talk before victor had to leave, Hugo wrapped his arms around him and buried his face in his stomach. "Please don't go victor!" Hugo pleaded desperately, tears pricking the corner of his eyes. Victor, who was well adversed with children, didn't seem phased in the slightest. He just returned the gesture and promised he would be back before Hugo woke tomorrow morning.
And just like that he was gone, So here Hugo had sat for the last 30 minutes, starring out the window, wishing for victor to come back. Luca had gone into the kitchen to clean up but it appeared they were done as he could hear them shuffle into the room. "Oh come now, he'll be back, there's no need to get so upset.". He looked up and saw them standing above them with a small smile and soft eyes. "I heard you liked knights." Hugo nodded slowly. "Why don't you come with me, I have a surprise." Curious, he followed.
They went up the stairs and down a few halls before coming to stop outside a door that he never noticed before. Luca opened the door and Hugo stalled, inside was a closet sized room with arms of all types. Swords, shields and even a suit of armor.
"Victors actually very proficient in the art of sword fighting. It's one of his many odd skills." "Did he teach you?" "No, my family has always been weapons people, but I would practice with him a lot.". "Will you show me?". "I'll do you one better, I'll teach you." Without another word they grabbed two swords and went into the ballroom.
There Luca handed one to Hugo and kept the other for themselves. "So, you hold it like this.......no move your hand down a bit..... good, now you stand like this....". It went on like this for about three hours, they showed Hugo how to properly disarm someone along with proper form and technique.
When they were done they went back to the small door to return there weapons. "I hope you you enjoyed that." "Yes, it was very nice, thank you." "Good, maybe don't tell Victor though. He isn't exactly the most fond of someone under the age of 13 using weaponry.". At the mention of victor Hugo's sadness returned full blast.
Now all he could think about was how much he missed the man. "Why don't we have some lunch, it's about the afternoon.". Luca was a surprisingly good cook, they had cheese sandwiches with tea and some tomato soup. It was a nice change from Victor who just cut up some vegetables and put a few drops of a yellow potion to make it bearable to eat.
After lunch Hugo was still sullen and when Luca noticed they suggested something, "why don't you paint him a nice picture for when he returns, I'm sure he would enjoy it.". He nodded vigorously at that and they went to the painting room. After gathering all the paints and brushes they set to work.
Luca painted a very detailed picture of a starry night with lots of colors and some winding mountains. Hugo's was of a apple tree on a hill. He painted the yellow sun with a smiley face and added a nice Carmel stallion. It was supposed to be tug, Hugo favorite horse at the town's stables. Then he added some nice clouds to go with the blue sky.
Luca said they needed to dry but would be done in time for Victors return. After they both laid there pictures on the drying rack and cleaned up they migrated into the library. The rest of the afternoon was spent reading but somewhere along the way he fell asleep. It wasn't all that surprising considering ever since Victor had told him he was leaving, about a week ago, Hugo hadn't been able to sleep.
He would lie awake for a while before paddling into the library and up to Victor, who liked to read for a few hours after Hugo went to bed, and tell him he couldn't fall asleep. Victor would, in-turn, rock Hugo to sleep by the fireplace while reading a potions book.
Hugo loved the feeling of comfort he got when ever victor would hug him or let him sit on his lap. Needless to say neither had gotten much sleep. When Hugo woke a hour or two later it was already 5 pm. Luca suggested they go for a quick walk before dinner.
The forest looked like a winter wonderland, It was cold and the ground was covered in snow. They walked for about a half hour before turning around. When they got back it was time to start preparing dinner, they had some cut up vegetables and buttered bread. After dinner, Luca offered to play cards in the sitting room.
It switched from that to chest, then finally sticks before they gave up on the fact Hugo didn't even need 10 minutes to win. They finally settled on building a tower with Hugo's blocks, they got it to be about as tall as the mantle before it wobbled and fell over. It was late by this point and Luca suggested that Hugo get ready for bed.
He was a little apprehensive but quickly changed his tune when he remembered he got to ring victor after. After brushing his teeth and changing into his pjs he ran to the study were the phone was and all but dived into the over stuffed chair.
He grabbed the phone and immediately dialed victors name (it's magic so you don't use phone numbers). After the second ring he picked up, "hi Victor!" "Hello Hugo, how was your day?" "It was really good! We played in the ballroom, then had sandwiches for lunch and after
That we painted some! Then I took a nap and when I woke up we went for a walk! After that we had dinner and built a really big block tower it was really fun!" "That's good, so you enjoyed yourself then." "Yeah, but I missed you a lot." "I missed you two dear.".They chatted a bit more before Victor said Hugo ought to go to bed. After a few tears he agreed and so here he was, lying in bed awake like the lost few nights. But tonight some how, it was worse. What if Victor didn't really come back? What if something awful happened to them? These questions kept filtering through his head before he finally fell asleep after a good two hours.
*********
When Hugo woke up the next morning the first thing he did was jump out of bed and run to the sitting room. Sure enough, there was Victor standing in the kitchen with Luca. "Victor!", Hugo shouted with a big grin. He sprinted at Victor and was quickly scooped up. "I missed you a lot, please don't leave again." Victor chuckled softly and bounced him a little. "I missed you to dear." "Really?" "Of course, all I could think about was how I wanted to see you."(Partially true, illegal stuff can be and he kept replaying the time Hugo spilled water on the floor then slipped on the towel he used to clean it up with in his brain.) Victor tried to set Hugo down but he was having non of it so Victor was forced to set him on his lap for the entirety of breakfast.
"So how was your trip." Luca asked. "Very well, and were things here?" "Oh nothing to exciting, we did paint a bit though.". "I painted you something!" Hugo chimed in, "let me go get it.". He jumped of Victors lap and returned a few moments later, picture in hand.
The 20 minutes were filled with Hugo going over everything in great with Victor nodding every once in a while. "It's very beautiful, why don't we hang it up later, Hugo couldn't help but beam at that. After breakfast Luca wished them both a farewell and headed out. The rest of the day was spent quietly relaxing, and if Victor noticed Hugos increase in clinginess, well, he didn't mention it.
