"Harder!" Ben panted as Matteo plowed. He wiped the sweat off his brow and kept to it. Matteo was grunting, working quickly.
His muscles were burning from the passionate, furious pounding he had received. Matteo grunted, taking a minute to survey his work and run his fingers through the long hair that had fallen in his face.
"Don't stop," Ben groaned. His eyes were blood red and glowing. "We have to hurry."
Matteo looked at what they were doing and his heart dropped.
"Ben," he whispered urgently. "We can't tell anyone about this." He paused. "Not even Cindy."
Ben stopped immediately, scowling at Matteo.
"Don't ever mention Cindy to me again," he growled.
Matteo swallowed hard. He didn't know what to say. He didn't know what to do. He never expected to find himself with his former best friend in the middle of the woods with shovels in hand.
His eyes turned to the dead man laying on the ground. He was surrounded by purple ooze, staining the sleeted forest floor. He had known Tyler from his high school days, he had been with them when Bianca died. And seeing the sheriff's son like this now-- black, starry tentacles forced out of his mouth like an overstuffed turkey-- well it was just too surreal to believe.
Flurries of fresh snow started peacefully drifting down around them, falling on their hair and eyelashes.
"I'm so sorry, Ben. I'm so sorry for... what I did."
Ben stopped digging for a minute and stared through Matteo.
"We're all fucking sorry for what you did."
He went back to digging.
