The next afternoon was a Friday, yay more family time. Dinner was ready which was breakfast food, my favorite. Donnie walked in the door from work.

"That goddamn tree needs to go, last night the TV in the master room was messin' up so bad I almost broke the damn thing. Japs made it so no wonder it's garbage!"

"The electricity poles need to be moved," I said to be funny.

"We can't move those things, they're stuck in the ground Birdie! Now where's supper?"

"It's ready to eat," Mom said.

We sat down.

"I'm gonna go to my buddy Willy's place tomorrow mornin' and talk em into helpin' me cut the tree down. And by the way Birdie, it's illegal to move those poles ourselves."

"So is drinking and driving Donnie."

"Girl, I oughtta bust you!"

"Donnie, Birdie, calm down, let's just eat our dinner," Mom said.

"Who asked you to bud in Valerie?"

"Donnie, this is between me and you," I said pointing to both of us.

Like I said before, I try to save Mom from Donnie's wrath, he's easier on me anyway.

"Huh...you wanna start somethin' between us?"

"If you call it that, then yeah sure."

He chuckled.

"You think you're so fearless and rebellious towards me, you undermine me each and everyday since I married your mama."

"Mom said the other day, I'm a teenager, it's what I do."

"Well, you need to stop it before I do somethin' to you I may or may not regret."

"What're you gonna do, kill me?"

Donnie just stared at me for about ten seconds.

"What's the point in goin' on, there's no fuckin' hope for this child."

I smirked in victory and continued to eat.

"Damn, scrambled eggs, toast, and biscuits are good like always baby."

Valerie smiled.

The next morning, I wanted to visit Buddy in his house. I knocked, I heard him walk to the door, stopped for a few seconds before opening.

"Birdie, so good to see ya, come on in."

I walked in, his house was as small as a single wide trailer.

"How are you?" I asked.

"Fine, about the same as always. Your mama doin' ok?"

"Yep, I think at dinner last night, I showed Donnie I'm fearless around him-"

"If he tries to hurt you or your mama, I'll go down there and kick his fuckin' ass!"

"Buddy, we're ok right now, I promise."

"I'm just sayin' Birdie Bird, I'm just really sensitive to the mistreatment of innocent women and children. I told you what happened to me."

"I remember, and again, I'm sorry you went through that, and it makes you into the man you are today."

"What kind of man do you think I am Birdie?"

"Strong, brave, kind, like me."

He smiled.

"You're the bravest girl in Brixton, always standin' up for yourself and the people you love."

"That's what Vicki said, I'm the bravest girl in all of Brixton, independence ain't a problem for me."

"You want some coffee?"

"Sure."

"Milk n sugar?"

"Yep."

He fixed me a cup of coffee.

"Your mama know you're here?"

"Yeah, she thinks you're sweet unlike Donnie."

"Donnie needs to shut his ass up."

"I know, he can go on for a whole day on a prejudice rant."

He walked back to me with my coffee.

"Again, he needs to shut his ass up. Here ya go."

"Thanks."

I took a sip.

"Mmmm, it's sweet like a honey suckle. You know this is my first cup of coffee."

"Oh really?"

"Yeah. When did you have your first cup Buddy?"

"When I was younger than you are, about thirteen."

"I think it's kinda early don't you?"

"As long as you drink it in the mornin's, you'll be fine. Caffeine can be easily be an addiction if you drink more than one cup a day."

"Mom loves coffee. She even buys different flavors of creamer: White Chocolate Mocha, Caramel, Pumpkin Spice."

"Good lord Birdie, I could get sick from drinkin' em too much!"

We laughed.
