I don't care anymore, I don't care anymore about what happens with me, Mom, or Donnie. I'm sick of taking beatings, I'm sick of protecting Mom. After all Donnie put us through, he decides to play the hero in front of his buddies and Mom just goes along with it! I'm to the point of not caring about anything. Even at school, I didn't care anymore. I refused to take notes in history class.
"Birdie, how come you're not taking notes?"
"I'm listening to you go on with your lecture."
"You gotta take notes for the test."
"Well, here's the logic sir, I have to take notes and pay attention to you at the same time, if I look at you, I'm not taking notes, and if I take notes, I'm not looking at you. We all get in trouble either way."
"You can do both at the same time Birdie, you're good at multitasking."
"I think I'd rather look at you run your mouth about something that happened a couple centuries ago."
"Birdie, what's wrong with you, you're a good kid. You're the most well behaved student in this class, you may not do the best in this class but you're a nice girl, you're so quiet."
I felt tears well up in my eyes.
"You need to see the guidance counselor?"
"No, I just had a tough weekend that's all, it happens to everyone of us."
I guess I do care about school.
"Hopefully later on you'll cool off, please take notes and listen to my lecture."
"Ok...thank you."
Class continued.
Me and my friend Vicki were at lunch, I have calmed down a little bit, I was eating aggressively because I haven't ate since lunch yesterday.
"Birdie, you ok?"
"Yeah," I said with my mouth full.
"You know you're eating more like a pig than usual?"
"I eat like a pig?"
"Kinda, but it's worse now."
"I'm just hungry, I didn't eat breakfast this morning. Don't care if the way I eat makes you uncomfortable, it's what we get when we live in Georgia."
"It's ok Bird, you're my best friend, I love you more than anything."
I started to quietly cry.
"Birdie...Birdie, I didn't mean to-"
"I know, you saying you love me really moved me."
She gave me a hug.
"I wish I could go away for a few days without a care in the world. You feel that way Vicki?"
"All the time. I'll tell you what, I'm thinking about going to the woods and spend a couple days camping. My parents let me camp before, they'll let me again this year I know it. You can come with me."
"That would be nice, but what if Mom and Donnie won't let...you know what, I'm not gonna listen to Donnie. Mom would say yes definitely because we both think he's a prick."
"Does he do stuff to you?"
"Like what?"
"Touch you?"
"No, he's just a cock sucker who drinks and hunts."
"If he does, I'll help you do something about it."
"Thanks Vic, love you."
"Love you."
I calmed down and continued to eat lunch.
