"What is that THING in your backpack?"
"It's my new pet dragon."
"Dragons aren't real!
"Then why is there one in my backpack?"
"Come on, stop messing with me. If it's a plushie, you don't need to - aahg!"
A blue head the size of a coconut had poked out of the bag, and was staring at him, curiously. Laughter filled the air as the girl saw what had shocked her friend so much. Still smiling, she stopped at the secluded alley in front of them and lowered her backpack.
"You heard 'plushie' and thought we talked about your panda pillow pet, uh Fluffy?" Its eyes lit up when it heard about the stuffed animal. "We've talked about this, you can't go out of the bag like that. What if people saw you?"
The little dragon looked down to the ground, emitting some kind of... whining sounds? Was it - was it crying?
"Ow, come on, don't cry." She begged, petting the small creature's jaw. "I know what will cheer you up. When we get home, I'm gonna give you some of that yogurt you like, okay? And then we can play together with the neighbor's naughty cat. But you have to wait until then..."
It closed its amber eyes and stroked its head against her open palm, sounding happier this time.
He just stood there, completely dumbfounded. In less than 10 minutes, he had discovered that A, dragons did exist, B, his best friend had somehow found one and had taken it as her pet, and C, dragons liked yogurt and panda plushies.
Uh. Who would have thought?
(Not him, apparently.)
"Now that's my dragon. Can you give me a smile?" Her sweet question snapped him back to reality. Not even a second after, the winged being was already happily nuzzling its snout to her cheek.
"I -- I love you too -- oo, li -- little troublema -- maker!" She managed to pant between laughs, the tiny scales on its paws tickling her neck. Seemingly satisfied, the blue creature pulled away a bit, enough to let her be able to talk normally again while not retreating too far from her. "Come on Fluffy, we have to get going."
The girl gestured towards her backpack. Understanding what she wanted, the little dragon lowered itself again, so the zipper would close the bag enough to hide all its body but let it breath at the same time. Once made sure nothing was visible from the outside, his friend carefully hung it over her shoulders, and looked back at him with a smug smile,
"So... what were you saying about dragons?"
Much to his regret, he snorted with laughter.
"You know what? Forget it."

With this prompt, I tried to keep it short and sweet. Maybe someday I'll finally write something that is at least 1000 words long, who knows?
By the way, who got the Percy Jackson reference? I thought it fitted well with the story!
Not gonna ask the same about the Harry Potter one, everyone knows where it is.
