In the article "A Brief History of English",the author Paul Roberts , proposes that it's important to know the history of the language in order to be able to understand the real English language. He explains that the English language history which shifts from Old to Modern for a long period of time.The history of the English language really started with the arrival of three Germanic tribes who invaded Britain during the 5th century AD. These tribes, the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes, crossed the North Sea from what today is Denmark and northern Germany. The invading Germanic tribes spoke similar languages, which in Britain developed into what we now call Old English. It runs from earliest record-breaking i.e. seventh century-to about 1100.In the fourteenth century English got prevailing in Britain once more, however with many French words included. This language is called Middle English. It was the language of the extraordinary artist Chaucer (c1340-1400), however it would still be difficult for native English speakers to understand today. Modern English, also known as New English, as opposed to Middle English and Old English, is the form of the English language spoken since the Great Vowel Shift in England, which began in the late 14th century and was completed in roughly 1550.
