Chapter 2: spaces

I'm woken up by a small old lady bringing me some sort of food. The oxygen I'm breathing in is clogged with smell of disinfectant and vomit. Where am I? Last time I remembered anything was in the car on my way home. And then I think I- I hit something...

Oh my god, the crash.

Feeling overwhelmed by nurses surrounding my bed, I tremble in fear and complete confusion. "Oh look she has woken up! I'll go get some water for her." one of the nurses utters as I stare into blank space. I think I'm in a hospital because this doesn't look like my room at all, unless I had gotten amnesia from the collision. Finally composing enough strength to even open my mouth I yelp " Where am I? Who are you?" As the nurses chuckle at my anxious sounding voice the one fluffing my pillow says calmly "No need to worry dear, we are going to take good care of you while you recover from that brutal accident. Poor thing, you must've broken a couple of bones."

My voice still shaking I say "May I have a mirror plea-please?" Looking at me in hesitancy she agrees and runs off to the end of the long corridor. Awkward silence fills the room as I wait for something to bring me back to reality, I'm just praying I'm still the same person I was at the club. I know one of the first things to ask for after waking up in a hospital bed isn't usually a mirror, it sounds pretty vain of me and strange, but I just want to see if I'm still the same person I remember last, not some stranger I don't remember.

As I see her running back with the few other nurses that went with her to grab a mirror (which seems pretty unnecessary because its only a small favour), I feel an awful shiver crawl over my body. What if it isn't me? Taking deep breaths as she gives me the small mirror I slowly hold it up to my face. In shock I look at myself. It is me but I look nothing like I did last time I checked.

There is a huge scratch almost covering my whole neck and I have scattered bruises all over my face, some worse than others. But the worst thing on my face is my swollen black eye, no wonder I couldn't see that clear through it. As the nurses see the horrified look on my face one of them pats me on my shoulder in comfort. But before she can even begin to try and make me feel better, an officer barges into my room.

"One of your staff told me she's awake" he states to the nurses. And as he looks at me in such a discomforting way I can already tell this isn't going to be good. Looking me up and down he tells me that as soon as I'm healthy enough to leave the hospital, I have to do some interviews about the crash. I feel my heart pouncing outside of my chest. I'm not ready to leave not just yet. Especially looking and feeling like this. I'm just praying the nurses let me stay a little longer.

"Well she has broken a few bones but if we give her some crutches and medication she's all good to go" the doctor speaks. My stomach drops. "Oh that's great! Well I'll schedule for the conference to be around 3pm? Is that enough time to get her medication and belongings?". I don't even know what time it is, and I definitely don't want to leave the hospital for at least another day.

"Yes that's fine, along as you can provide her with a way of transport, I'm pretty sure her car is getting fixed". Oh thank god, at least grandad's car made it out not completely damaged. "Okay, see you later Olivia, I'll bring a car here at 3, and don't forget you will be asked some questions by your captive too"

My captive? And how does he even know my name? Before I can even ask the officer walks out of the door and into the distance.

"Right I think you young lady need a nice warm shower, ill go get some of the spare clothes we picked up from your car."

As one of the nurses carefully brushes my blow-dried hair, I can't stop thinking about what the officer said. My captive? I wasn't holding captive of anyone last night. And after eventually finding my phone in the reception desk I grabbed my belongings and left. I didn't bother calling Emily, she would've worried too much. I'll probably tell her when I get back to our apartment, whenever that would be.

So now I'm sat in the back of an officer's car, anxiously waiting for my arrival at the police station. I've never been interviewed by the police before, and for my first time it doesn't help I have no clue what happened last night, I just remember the crash on the motorway, then I woke up in hospital. Feeling sick to my stomach I try not to overthink my situation by taking deep breaths. It's not helping. Nothing is helping.

I grab the car handle and my hands begin to sweat and shake, I'm so nervous and I have no idea what I've done wrong, apart from crashing and drunk driving, obviously. Well actually maybe I do know what I've done wrong. Anyways, the police station wasn't as scary looking as I thought it would be, it was vast and quite rough around the edges, but not terrifying. As I followed the officer to the reception, I was told I had to wait for one of the people who were involved in the crash. So for what almost felt like hours I sat looking at the dim walls until they finally arrived.

When the officer tapped me I immediately escaped my daydreams and looked outside of the glass doors, and from a distance I could see a man in a black suit. Here's what I've not been looking forward to. But as he kept walking I stared in astonishment. His lean figure saunters towards the doors with a commanding confidence and effortless mystery radiating off of him. The sunset beautifully glows on his skin and illuminates his sharp jawline. He is the most fascinating man I have ever seen. I feel bewitched.

When the doors open for him the whole room is captivated by this peculiar sense of power he holds

When the doors open for him the whole room is captivated by this peculiar sense of power he holds. It's almost like we are all trapped under his mysterious spell. But then everything stops moving in slow motion, and I'm back to reality when the officer sat next to me shouts him and the police man walking with him over. Oh no this isn't happening. I've already lost the ability to breathe before he even walked into the room, now I have to introduce myself to him?! And actually have human contact. Please God take me anywhere else but here.
