One day Emma went out. She wanted to surprise her boyfriend for their upcoming anniversary. She wasn't quite sure what to get him. But figured if she looked around for a bit she would eventually come up with something.
Her first stop was a tiny yet busy coffee/bookshop where her boyfriend always likes to visit. Looking around the dozen number of shelves trying to find an intriguing book that can catch her eye. But Emma wasn't a bookworm herself so that was a bust.
Next, she looked at small trinkets: a picture frame, a small keychain, a dazzling ring. But none of those seemed right for her collected, funny, smart boyfriend who could always make Emma laugh.
All through the day, Emma was constantly going to shops looking for anything that seemed to fit her boyfriend. She looked at watches, toys, teddy bears, clothes. Using up the entire day and sadly she sighed in defeat.
She slowly stumbling up the stairs to her apartment building when she heard voices afar. Emma just assumed her roommate had friends over. But as she got closer and closer she realized her boyfriend was the other voice.
She crept closer with her ear against pressed in the hall as she made her way to the light from the creaked door of her roommate's room.
"I don't think I can keep on lying to her." Her boyfriend muffled voice expressed worry.
"Come on, she doesn't suspect anything." Her roommate's voice encouraged.
"But this doesn't feel right."
"Get your act together. We have been doing this for so long already. We can't stop now." She added.
"Humm." He thought about it. "I guess you're right. After all, she won't be my girlfriend soon anyway."
"You sure you want to wait for your guys' anniversary?"
"Yeah, it will be the perfect moment."
Emma could no longer listen. The boyfriend she always thought would be more and the friend she can always count on. They were always there for her. She felt utterly betrayed.
"What are you guys doing?" Emma asked in a calm voice. Checking the room for any evidence of their affair.
They both stood up abruptly, quickly eyeing each other for an excuse.
"Nothing, I was just- I came looking for you, honey." Emma's boyfriend replied nervously, clenching his hand.
Honey.
The word echoed in her mind.
"Yeah and I told him you weren't here." Her roommate chimed in.
"Then why are you still here?" Emma said bluntly but she didn't care.
"Well...Lou said that you'll be back really soon so I decided to wait for you."
"I told you that I'll be really busy today and you still decided to visit me?" Emma asked carefully, hoping to have him stumble in a lie.
They were both now silent.
"What is really going on here?" Emma asked. Giving them the chance to come clean. She suspected no she knew that her boyfriend was hiding something but not this. Staring into their eyes once more before scoffing and turning around to the dimly lit hallway.
"Honey..." Her boyfriend called after her. But a thud replaced his unspoken words.
A single box rolled out of the boyfriends' hand bumping against Emma's shoe. Curiously Emma opened the box finding a note reading:
Emma for a long time I have known that you're special. I have waited for this moment for a long time, that is if you say yes.
Behind the note lied a single diamond ring. Emma was simply shocked.
"I was going to wait for our anniversary to propose. And I asked Lou for help planning out how I was going to do it." He took Emma's hand into his own. "So please don't be mad. But...but will you marry me?"
Seconds after blinking the shock away, a single "Yes!" Echoed throughout the apartment.
And after a long squeezing hug Emma's boyfriend worked up the courage, "Well you ah simply wait for our anniversary?"
"What?"
"It's just me and Lou took sooo long to plan everything and it'd be a shame to waste all our hard work. And I'd really love it if you let me propose to you in front of dozens of random people." He pleaded.
"So let me get this straight you want me to wait on the second happiest day of my life after the love of your life agreed to marry you just because you want to finish your plan?"
"Yeah."
"You know after wasting the whole day looking for your present I don't think you even deserve it."
"What no honey. It's not like that. But what did you get me?"
"None of your business. I present it to you in front of dozens of people."
"Oh come on honey! Please."
"Nope."
"Please honey it's unfair. You thought I was cheating on you! The least you could do is show me."
Giving him a firm, no, Emma kicked home out. And finally got the long sleep she deserved. Meanwhile, Lou enjoyed the sweet action.
