Otis woke up early and ready to shine. He smiled gleefully at himself. Today was a special day. He had planned the whole day out. There was no chance for failure.
He thought to himself, today has to go perfectly.
He excited himself with glee put on a charming outfit and carried a bucketload of crimson roses.
Each step he took was filled with a nervous mental breakdown. Although he did know what will have and the answer he so long desired.
He took a deep breath and knocked on her door.
Out revealed a sandy-haired girl with loose short hair, green-eyed, petite. Wearing a striped pink to white shirt tucked under her black casual mini skater skirt with nude ballet flats and carried a pink taylor mini crossbody handbag.
"Oh you look beautiful, honey" Otis complemented.
"Handsome as usual." She said as the flowers were being placed between her palms. "Let me put these in water." She headed back inside.
"Just put them on top of the counter. I'm really nervous so I want to be done with this day as soon as possible." Otis added impatiently.
"Otis!" She scolded. "I am the love of your life. This is a special day. Continue this and I will say no."
Otis knew full well that his girlfriend was not joking.
"Sorry." He said quickly.
"Now that's like it." And she continued to get a flower vase, fill it up with water, removed the plastic paper. And well doing it took her sweet time. All the while Otis had to wait outside.
"Done." She started heading down the hall. "What are you waiting for?" She called behind her.
"I'm coming put my leg is a little numb." Otis explained. Tiptoeing towards his girlfriend.
"Okay just don't make me wait too long." His girlfriend yelled as she was already down the first flight of stairs.
Otis hurried up and regained all feeling in his legs. "Thanks for waiting." He kissed her on the cheek.
"No problem. Where are we headed to first?"
"Wait and see okay."
For the remainder of the day, Otis took his girlfriend down memory lane. He took her to the small coffee shop where they first meet. A park where they first confessed. The place of their first date. Everywhere they went was where good memories were made.
The sky grew to a cold dark blue with only lights from nearby buildings acting as stars and lamplights to shine their way.
"Happy anniversary. Hope today was worth the wait."
"It truly was."
They came out of a movie theater hand in hand.
"So." Otis started. "What's my present?"
"Oh, I guess we're doing this now." She stopped and dug through her handbag and with both hands handed him a book.
Through the dime light, he made out the little bold words: "The Book Thief by Markus Zusak". Otis turned the page and it read a single quote:
"Memory is a way of holding on to the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose."
- Kevin Arnold
Otis turned to the next page. It was full of pictures of his girlfriend as a baby to an adult. The page after that was pictures of him from a baby to an adult. The pages after that were filled with pictures of their dates that Otis's girlfriend took any chance she got and valuable items. Like the bunny hair clip that caused so much debate. It was a photo album disguised as a book. The book Otis was reading when they first met.
"This is truly perfect. I'm jealous. I only got you something that opens the doorway to your future." Otis pouted.
"Sorry that I'm good at giving gifts."
Otis kneeled on one leg and opened a box containing the diamond ring he was hoping she would proudly wear on her finger.
"Will you marry me, Emma?"
"Do you have to ask? I already said yes!" Emma chuckled. Holding out her finger as Otis gladly slipped the ring on.
"Oh, I love you, Otis." Emma jumped to hug her now fianće.
"I love you too honey."
