The yearning for her presence consumes me, and I take one final, bittersweet sip of Brandy, the amber liquid warming my throat as I listen to the crackling fire slowly dying down. Restlessness courses through my veins, and my wolf's discontent echoes my own feelings – we both ache for her, for our missing mate. "Easy for you to say," he groans.
Frustration builds inside me like a simmering storm, and I can no longer contain it. "WHY THE FUCK is taking so long to find HER?" I slam my glass cup onto the table beside me, the sharp sound piercing the air. The room seems to vibrate with our shared agony, the pain of her absence tearing us both apart. I can't fathom why it's taking so damn long to find her, to bring her back to me where she belongs.
Doesn't he understand that we are both hurting? Can't he see that I'm going through the same agonizing pain as him? Before I have a chance to vent my frustration to my wolf or anyone else, Ramsey's urgent mind link cuts through my thoughts.
"Alpha, we need your presence on east mountain," Ramsey's voice resonates in my mind, demanding my attention. Can't I have any kind of peace today? Great timing. I mind link Ramsey back and curtly inform him that I'm on my way. With a heavy sigh, I grab my coat and head toward the door, the urgency of the matter pulling me from my internal turmoil.
Stepping outside, the crisp autumn air greets me with a gentle breeze, painting the landscape in hues of red, orange, and gold. Despite the beauty of the season, my heart remains heavy with the memories of Noel. Autumn was her favorite time, and the memories of the simple joys we shared – like grabbing hot chocolate at the cozy local cafe before I left – flood back, tinged with regret and longing.
My chauffeur, Reno, stands patiently by the car, his seasoned eyes holding a warm glimmer of familiarity. "Beautiful day, Mr. Moon," he tips his hat, a true loyal servant who has been with my family for generations. Despite his age, Reno is sharp and quick-witted, and our banter comes effortlessly. I force a smile, appreciating his presence amidst the chaos of my life, and reply, "Beautiful indeed, Reno. You seem unusually cheery today. Have you found a new job to replace me already?"
He chuckles heartily, his laughter infectious. "New job? Nobody will hire this old wolf! And as for the cheery demeanor, someone's gotta bring the Christmas spirit around here!" I playfully roll my eyes at his enthusiasm. "Christmas spirit? We haven't even gotten through Halloween yet, Reno. Slow your roll, my friend." His lottery-winning smile warms my heart, reminding me how fortunate I am to have someone like him in my life. I have few authentic connections with people, but Reno is an exception – his genuine presence is a comfort amidst the loneliness that gnaws at my soul.
As Reno closes the car door behind me, I sink into the plush seat, deep in thought, I can't help but wonder what could be so crucial that it demands my immediate attention on the east mountain. Why couldn't Ramsey come to me instead? Whatever this is, it better be damn important to warrant dragging me away from my brooding thoughts about Noel.
