Alicia hesitated to walk to the door; the yard contained coffins with skeletal arms and legs sticking out of them. Leading up to the door were carved pumpkins with bluish hued light circling within. Howling winds played from a sound system. From somewhere Alicia heard a frightened scream and a cackle.
Malik shook as he ambled toward a black door surrounded with cobwebs and large fanged spiders hanging down in front of the door. Bloodied hands reached through the cement to grab children before they could ask for candy. Alicia hugged her mother's leg.
Malik motioned for Alicia to come to the door. She shook her head; her parents laughed. He pushed on a lit button that ding-donged and yelled with profound excitement, "Trick-or-treat." To Malik's left, red eyes lit up; a deep and fiendish voice crackled, "Trick!"
Alicia screamed and Malik hacked toward the area of demonic voice with his pillow sheet. With his little five year old legs he ran down the three steps towards his parents as fast as he could. His father darted for Alicia who did not wait for her parents to save her. Malik trembled as he made it to his mother's waiting arms. She looked up when a yellowish light came through the crack of the foreboding door. More light shone and an elderly lady wearing a black pointed hat and matching cape appeared in the open door way. Malik's mother ushered him to the door. Meanwhile, Alicia while in the arms of her father flailed as her eyes rained.
"Yes, who is at the door?" the witch meekly questioned. She looked at the children at the door. "Oooh...a ninja, a beautiful princess, and a beautiful fairy. The children's parents looked at one another. They thought the lady may have lost a few marbles. After wiping her eyes Alicia twirled in her dress and Malik performed karate chops.
"How lovely you three are," the witch said. She grabbed a black and orange swirled bowl sitting on an end table next to the door and presented candy bars to Malik, Alicia, and a third child received a colorful candy called, "Fly Storm". Their parents looked at one another as the candy floated in the air and disappeared.
"What three lovely children you have," the witch said.
"Thank you," the children's mother replied. She turned away; her eyes flooded with fluid.
"What's wrong my dear," the witch asked with a tender voice.
The mother held back tears. "I'm sorry it is just that we have only two children, we lost a child three years ago on Halloween."
The witch folded her fingers. "She wasn't lost my dear, I'm sorry to tell you my special candy turned her into a cloud. I gave her a choice to be anything when she ate the candy. She said she wanted to fly and control the weather but mistakenly the magic candy turned her into a cloud. I'm sorry, I did not realize what had taken place."
The parents looked up into the air above the witch's porch and watched their daughter float down to the ground. Their baby girl materialized before their eyes. No two parents hugged their child more.
