We were moving, again. Leaving all of my friends behind, including my girlfriend of seven months. Normally I wouldn’t care about having to move again, but the fact that my parents kept talking about how mysterious and unusual this new home is, along with all the superstitions, majorly annoyed me.
“Sweetie, you are going to love this place! And don’t worry, you’re a good looking lad so you’ll make a bunch of new friends in this small town,” my mom said very chipper.
“Whatever ma’,” I replied while looking out the window at a vast number of trees. Great, I’m trapped in the middle of nowhere.
“Aiden, we are turning over a new leaf,” Dad said in a scolding way, “so I expect you to become more respectful to your mother and I.”
“‘Kay Dad,” I replied not really paying any attention as to what he said.
Mom and Dad then just went on to talking amongst themselves about their new jobs, and about the wonderful new opportunity for this family to grow closer and discover new things. I have never been convinced that this family is ever going to get closer. Of course I’m never gonna say that to their faces.
“Alright sweetie,” Mom said bringing me out of my nonexistent thoughts, “we’re here!!!” I really and truly was not in the mood for her preppy and cheerful ways; but I still turned my head to look out of the right side of the car.
The first thing I saw was the ugly tar yellow of an almost desolate victorian styled home. I might have seen the value of it had I been born hundreds of years ago, but now it just looked like one of those awful B rated horror movies. I just knew beyond a doubt that my parents were already trying to kill my social life and heck, maybe even my own life.
“Alright sweetie,” Mom said very chipper while tossing a set of keys at me, which I caught last minute. “Pick out which room you want and feel free to explore the property. We have to get to our new jobs, so we should be back in time for dinner and to start unpacking all the boxes in the garage. So have fun!”
I grabbed my backpack and trudged along the gravel driveway up the front door. As soon as I got the door unlocked and open my parents took off down the driveway and onto the dirt road. I dropped my backpack onto the marble flooring and grabbed my IPhone to listen to my music. As soon as I clicked play, “Stoned” by Hinder began to play while I plopped down on the cloth covered sofa. I layed there for a while just listening to an entire playlist until I got the feeling of going down to the lake.
I don’t know what my expectations were about the lake, but it seemed a little promising. As I exited the back door, the lake took up most of the landscape and I finally understood why my parents were so fascinated with this place. The entire lake was frozen in the middle of summer. It should not be physically possible, but there it was right in front of my eyes. While I approached the lake, I decided that I wanted to find out whether or not it was solid enough to hold my weight as I walked on it.
To my surprise the lake was able to hold me, and I began to venture further out from the shore. The popping and crackling of the ice began to increase as I got closer to the edge of the dock. There was then one loud and final pop that signaled me to stop where I was going. I crouched down to the ice, out of curiosity to what lay beneath the ice. I wiped away the ice, believing that I would possible see a fish or more water in the least. Instead I cried out when I saw the face of a girl staring right back at me.
I didn't know what I was doing after I saw that girl in the ice. All I know is that I somehow maneuvered my way off the lake and was running towards the garage. As soon as I got into the garage I began looking for something. Consciously I had no idea what I was looking for until my subconscious found it. I had a handful of tools that could be used to break the ice, and a blanket. Now I knew what I had to do. I ran back to the lake and quickly made it over to where I had found the girl. After clearing away the frost, I began to hack away at the ice surrounding the girl.
After what felt like only a few minutes, all of the ice around the girl broke into pieces. I quickly took the ice out so that I would be able to reach the girl. The logical part of my brain told me that there is no way that this girl could still be alive, but at the same time I felt that there is still a small chance that she could be alive.
As soon as all of the ice had been taken out, I was able to see the full beauty of this girl. She had long brown hair and flawless skin. Her body was also perfect. I couldn't dwell so much on that because I had the feeling that time was running out.
I quickly puller her out of the lake and wrapped her in the blanket that I had brought with me. I picked her up and quickly but carefully carried her back into the house. As soon as I got into the house I found the couch I had been laying on earlier and laid her there. I was still puzzling as to why I felt the need to get her out of the ice when I noticed that her chest was moving up and down. She was alive!
Lightning struck followed by a loud boom of thunder. The house felt like it was shaking and the lights began to flicker off and on. I was paralyzed where I sat, not knowing where this storm came from. I glanced over at the girl and noticed that she was still deep in sleep dispite the chaos that was surrounding us.Her dark eyelashes were fluttering against her cheeks trying to decide whether or not to wake her up. Without warning her eyes shot open and the storm that was going on around us instantly ceased.
