The carriage to Hogwarts wasn't too horrible. The crisp air had made us all scoot into one space trying to keep one another warm.
The carriage had been pulling itself, the seats were velvet and there had been a soft forest green blanket spread out among us.
"Harry, how are you?" Hermione said breaking the silence.
"I'm fine Hermione, really." He replied
I don't believe him."How could this happen? How could Dumbledore let this happen. Hogwarts is supposed to be safe. Not have students dying left and right and getting their souls sucked out of them, literally. Harry if you're hurt or..or..or I don't know you feel unsafe you need to go to Dumbledore. He's supposed to make sure this stuff doesn't happen, yet every single year I've been here, it has." I said, louder than I intended.
Harry, Ron and Hermione stared at me for a moment. Up ahead I see Draco and his friends turned around laughing at me.
I sit silently for the rest of the ride. I'm angry. Hogwarts is supposed to be safe, I say to myself again. We should all want to come back, not fear for our lives because we have to.
Something tells me this is the least of what I need to be worried about. After we've entered Hogwarts we head towards the great hall.
I can smell the warm chicken, mash potatoes, and other foods I can't wait to fill my stomach with.As we enter, there is a warm feeling in the air, outside the windows you can see the orange, yellow, and brown leaves start to fall.
The first years could be entering any moment to be sorted, but Ron was already stuffing his face with pumpkin pie.
I can't blame him really. The house elves here do an amazing job cooking for us. Their actually quite nice too, me and Hermione spoke with them last year.We found that nobody recognizes all they do for us, one day we hope to do something about it.
The sorting had started and the appetizers were taken away so we could pay attention.
Many students were sorted into Gryffindor to our delight.
We didn't mind the first years. Some were just curious and while being friends with Harry is nice, he often has some fans.
Others had just gotten used to it.After the sorting ceremony was over, before the feast, Dumbledore said there was an announcement he had to make.
"Now I know you all are aware of the incident that happened today on the train.." he began. "..I will be speaking with students who were effected later, however. You have a right to know why and what these things are.."
I glance over to Harry and he shoots me a curious look.
"..these are dementors, sent here to capture and search for Sirius Black.."
there's a few murmurs and whispers at the mention of his name.
"..they are guarding the castle to keep you, your peers, and your teachers safe." He smiles as he says the next thing, "now let's feast!""That was cheerful" Ron says sarcastically. Hermione laughs and we start to eat.
A few moments had went by when we were rudely interrupted from our fantastic meal by Malfoy and his stupid friends.
"Is it true that you fainted? I mean you actually fainted, that's pathetic, ridiculous if you ask me" he says.
"It's funny because nobody did ask you Malfoy." I say back to him defending Harry.
I know Harry doesn't like when I defend him. He says he can do it on his own but he hardly ever sticks up for himself.Draco rolls his eyes and gets back to talking with his friends.
After the feast we all head to the common room.
The fat lady had been giving us a hard time getting in, she was trying to impress us with her horrible singing skills. As we enter the room I see the scarlet and gold decor.
Seeing the lit fire place and cozy setting reminds me of how much I had missed Hogwarts, it felt more like home than my actual home.
It smells of pumpkin pie and fall leaves, giving the area a home-y/comfortable setting.I go upstairs to my dorm and start to unpack.
For some reason all I can think about was Draco's eyes. They were gray, with a hint of dark blue in them.
My mind keeps bringing me back to when our eyes had met on the train.
He had looked different from last year, which I pretended not to notice in fear that I'd stare for too long.
I wasn't quite sure why Harry and him never got along. I always tell Harry that the way they met was just a bad setting, that Draco just wanted to impress him and that he should give him another chance. But Harry never listens to me, besides, my mind had turned back to when Draco made fun of Hermione when she was petrified last year, and all those nice, warm, fuzzy thoughts had disappeared, and I was back to hating him again.
"Are you alright?" Hermione says.
"Yes, just thinking." I reply.
"Hm, well, alright. You should get some rest. We've got a long day tomorrow, and we have to plan for what we're going to do in Hogsmeade next week!"The next day I had woke up late, which is just..wonderful.
I rushed to get on my robes and uniform.
"Ugh Hermione! Why didn't you wake me up?" I say angrily.
"You just looked so peaceful and I didn't want to interrupt any dreams you were having, I'm sorry" she replies.I scoff. "It's alright. What time is it? How much time do we have left"
"Well our first class starts in...five minutes." She says then smiles.
"Five minutes?!" I say looking back at her with a shocked expression "..Five minutes?!" I repeat. "Are you joking?!"After I'm done getting dressed I grab Hermione by the arm and rush to our first class, potions.
My hair had looked a mess, my socks were uneven, and my entire look was the opposite of what I wanted to look like on the first day.
I suppose it won't matter, I repeat that to myself until I see malfoy and his friends come up behind us."Running late are we?" He says, he looks at me up and down. "Way to make a good impression Greene!"
"Shove off Malfoy, you look just as horrible yourself. Not to mention your mess of hair and loose sweater, it looks like you've been attacked by a bear" I reply. He looks at me strangely, I notice I've been too defensive around him, and I need to just not care..but I do. I do care, I don't know why, or even if he cares too, but that's not what matters now.
Hermione tugs on my robes and we rush to our class.
"Your face is bright red." Hermione says as we enter potions, just on time.
"Reall-"
I'm interrupted by our potions teacher, Professor Snape.
"I'd prefer if you didn't show up to class three minutes late ladies, thirty points from Gryffindor, ten points for each minute you wasted our time. All your house mates can thank you later."
My mouth drops and I glance at Hermione with wide eyes.
Just then, Draco slowly walks in with his friends, purposely causing attention to himself he hits his books against the counters.
Snape just watches as they find a seat. Talk about favoritism.Lunch time was in a few moments. This was the one thing I was looking forward to. This entire day had been a nightmare.
As we sit down at the table. I look at Harry who's been reading the daily prophet.
"You never read, what rubbish is in there today?" I say.
He looks up at me then back down at his paper. Without looking back at me he says "have any of you heard anything about Sirius Black?"
I look over to Harry, then to Ron.
Ron laughs as he says "mate, the whole Wizarding worlds heard of him, he's the only person to ever escape Azkaban."
Harry doesn't say anything.
"Says here he's a murderer." Harry says after a while.
"Well..um..yes that's why he was in Azkaban to start with." I say, confused and slightly shocked that he's actually never heard of him.
"I'm not stupid Soph" he says.
"Sorry." I say. "Supposedly he was supposed to stay for the rest of his life, imagine" I say.
"Yeah, crazy."After a few moments of eating and small talk we come to find our we've got the rest of our afternoon classes together.
