chapter one.

the dark lord, yet to rise in power, sat on his lonesome in the library of hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. a book bound in black leather; closed and facing him sat neatly beside rolls of parchment and pots of ink. tom riddle dotted the i's of his letter, and cleaned off his large, barn owl feathered quill. "it doesn't do to eavesdrop, edwards..." the boy drawled, taking his eyes from the paper. he heard her shuffle awkwardly toward the table and watched her sit before him.

"i wasn't eavesdropping, actually" she said matter-of-factly, discarding her books on the table. "i just wasn't willing to disturb you" she finished, tom blew out a sarcastic breath, of course he didn't believe her. he was smarter than to believe her.

tom watched as she silently studied, feeling disturbed that anybody would want to even be near him at the moment. "shame about that myrtle girl" came marjorie's voice, tom shrugged "yeah i s'pose".

"whats so interesting about me, edwards?" tom asked, a smirk finding its way on his lips. "you've been following me around since term began". she didn't answer at first- instead she just stared at him, mouth agape. marjorie seemed dumbfounded, she could tell he was enjoying this, watching her squirm in embarrassment.

she managed to compose herself before he could taunt her. "a lot of things." the girl told him, clasping her fingers together. marjorie seemed to have watched him for too long, because she saw the unease in his eyes. she looked away.

"you're different" she mumbled and fidgeted with her bag. tom was interested now— narcissistic in his own liking. "how so?" he asked quietly, smirking at the fact that someone took notice in him.

"oh i don't bloody know" marjorie was flustered, she'd embarrassed herself by even sitting down. "i'd best be off" she said, scattering from the table, leaving an unfamiliar thing.

a small, golden key. tom stared at it, he'd wondered what it would possibly unlock in the castle that he didn't know about...

tom riddle picked up the key, and slipped it in his pocket, and he left the library.

he felt a great sense of power from obtaining the girls key. he'd no idea why he felt so triumphant, tom knew he'd return it to her. if he'd remember.

tom set off towards the girls bathroom, and dwelled in the confidence he'd gotten from seemingly nowhere. darkness crept into his mind, thoughts of myrtle and everything inbetween. his plans were working. his heart was black and his soul was rotting...

he knew it, and he liked it.
