The Search for Light

Part 1; Chapter 2

The carriage raced down the path of dirt, creating more and more distance between Eden and us. Karla was fast asleep. How? I have no idea. I tried to sleep earlier but the noise of the movement constantly distracted my mind. Plus, I was feeling hyper at the moment.

My fingers tapped urgently on my thighs. I was restraining my feet from tapping. It would only cause more noise and I didn't want to wake up Karla. Her eyes held bags under them this morning. She never slept on time, not on Earth and not here.

I got up from where I was sitting and looked at Karla. Her neck was bent at an awkward angle and it made me cringe. She was definitely going to be in pain when she woke up. I picked up a cushion that had fallen on the ground and placed between her head and her shoulder. Then I went up to the front and sat next to Jack.

"I'm bored," I said to him. He glanced at me. "And," I subconsciously started tapping my foot. "I feel hyper."

Jack said nothing. My eyes darted around the place. The trees towered over us. They were cool at first. Now their brown bark was just a reminder that they were regular trees. And that I was bored.

"Ugh," I leaned back and almost fell back into the room back. "I feel like running around."

"You're acting strange," Jack finally said something.

"Finally, Jack! You've been so quiet, my gosh."

Jack smiled and then frowned. "Are you," he started. His eyes flew left and right as he searched for the right word. "Alright?"

"No. I'm dying of boredom, Jack." This time, I purposely fell back. When I finally got back up, I noticed the horses had slowed down.

"Mimi," he said my name like he was testing something.

"Yeah?"

He pulled on the reins, stopping the horses. "Mimi."

"Are you gonna ask a question or not?" I asked, feeling a bit annoyed.

"Sorry. You're just acting weird," he said. He yanked his arm up and the horses neighed loudly before running again.

"I am?"

He nodded. "You've been acting weird ever since you woke up."

"Oh," I stared down at my hands. They neatly sat still and folded on my lap. My posture was straight and perfect. I wasn't sitting like myself. I tried slouching my shoulders and my back but it felt uncomfortable.

Should I tell him? The question lingered in my mind like the silence between.

"How am I different?" I finally asked.

He took a moment to respond. "You just... are."

"Was I a really big female dog before this?"

"Yes," he answered way too quickly. "Shit. I shouldn't have said that. I'm sorry."

"Huh? It's okay, I don't..." care, is what I was about to say before a bright yellow attracted my dark brown eyes. "Stop the carriage," I said. My voice sounded dazed like it was under a spell.

"Just do it," I waved my hand and Jack listened. He harshly pulled back on the reins and the horses came to a stop.

"What is it?"

"I saw something," I said.

"Where?"

"Back there. It was yellow. It looked like an egg," my words attracted Jack's attention.
