Behind the barred windows of the HYDRA-Facility the rain fell, as James Bunchanan Barnes stopped being himself.

His loss of identity had been gradual. He didn't knew the moment when he, Sergeant Barnes, soldier in the one hundred and seventh infantry regiment, had lost the certainty of his autonomy.

When was the first morning when he woke up with a bottomless emptiness in his chest, not knowing who he was or where he was from?

When was the first night when his last thought was not about his lost home and the fate of his friends?

When was the first night when he woke up from a nightmare screaming without knowing why?

When was the last time he was comforted by the thought of Brooklyn?

HYDRA had proceeded perfidiously in their plan to gradually rob Barnes of his identity.

The first thing they did was teach him to hate his mother language. Electric shocks and searing pain from probes under his skin conditioned him whenever an English word escaped his mouth.
Instead, he learned Russian.

Barnes began to dread his own English thoughts, until one day he stopped thinking at all. Dull silence replaced the fiction of his escape.

That's how they broke him.

The last thing they did was to take away his family; not those through blood, but those he had acquired through ashes and dust. Steve Rogers faded away to an aching pain, the mermorys of the one hundred and seventh infantry regiment were blown up into an enemy image with help of cruel methods. He learned to hate the United States of America, the country for which he had last given his life selflessly.

That's how they broke him.

The rain continued to fall even after James Buchanan Barnes became the Winter Soldier.

The metallic sound of a mechanical arm against bars, a deep breath- and then: " Ready to obey ."
