Chapter 5: A New Friend

'I see you're finally awake kid.'

Kyl was startled by the figure standing in the opening of the door and jumped back a little. 'whoah easy there, I won't harm you I swear.' the figure said calmly. It was an older looking man wearing a green sweater made from wool with worn out jeans to complete the outfit. He had a kind expression on his face, which made Kyl feel a bit more at ease. 

'Who are you? And how'd I get here?' Kyl asked. 

'My name is Robert. I found you passed out in an alley not far from here, I couldn't leave you all by yourself so i took you with me and waited till you woke up.' the man explained. 'Owh.. okay..' Kyl said quietly. 

'How did you end up there? Do you need me to call your parents?' Robert said with a worried expression on his face. 'No!' Kyl exclaimed. 'I- I mean.. no thank you, mr. Robert.. I was just walking around when these big kids grabbed me and stole my money.' Kyl said with a sad expression.

'I see.. I'm guessing those kids were from that local group of hooligans. They just showed up a few weeks ago and have been causing trouble ever since.' Robert complained. 

'So you don't need me to call your parents? I don't feel like you're from around here, so at least let me give you a ride home kid.' Robert said. 'Oh uh.. No thanks, I'm fine.. I just moved here and was looking around the place.' Kyl lied. 'Plus my mom won't expect me home anytime soon anyways..' Kyl continued.

'You ran away didn't you?' Robert said. 'Wh- what I-' Kyl stammered. 'Come on kid I wasn't born yesterday. I recognize a look like that instantly. I was a runaway as well.' Robert interrupted. Kyl nodded, knowing he couldn't convince him otherwise. 'It's okay kid.. Don't worry I won't send you back. I get what you're going through.' Robert said in a strong yet soothing voice. 'Thank you mr. Robert..' Kyl said softly.

'So  what's you name?' Robert asked, sitting down next to Kyl. 'I'm Kyli- I mean... Kyl.. yeah.. Kyl.' Kyl said. He had always hated his full name, now he had a chance to be known as someone else. As Kyl.

 'Alright then, nice to meet you Kyl.' Robert said with a smile. 'Do you want something to eat? You look hungry.' He said in a caring way in which Kyl didn't hear anyone speak to him often. It made him feel warm inside. As if someone cared about him. Kyl nodded and followed Robert downstairs. 

Kyl entered Roberts living room and was pointed towards a table to sit at. It was a small and cozy looking room that gave him the same warm feeling at the room he woke up in. 'I don't have that much food yet, but i should have some leftovers left in the fridge. I'll heat 'm up for you and I'll be back in a sec, okay?' Robert said. 'Okay mr. Robert' Kyl said gratefully. He watched Robert walk into a room which he guessed was the kitchen. Kyl waited for a few minutes staying quiet and looking around the living room. He saw a comfy looking sofa with a few soft pillows on it and some shelves stacked with DVD's. 'He must be a movie lover' Kyl thought.

Then Robert walked out of the kitchen with a steaming plate of food. 'There you go.. It's not much, but I hope you'll enjoy it.' Robert said as he put the plate down in front of Kyl. 'Thank you mr. Robert.' Kyl said with a smile. Robert chuckled at Kyl calling him 'mr. Robert' all the time, but he didn't say anything about it. 'Now eat up, it's lasagna, my own recipe.' Robert said. Kyl had never had lasagna before, but it smelled amazing so he quickly took a bite. 'This is amazing!' he said. 'Aw stop you're making me blush.' Robert joked. Kyl softly chuckled at this before continuing the dish. Robert smiled as he made the quiet kid laugh and sat down on the couch.

After a few minutes Kyl had finished the food and quietly brought his plate to the kitchen. When he walked back into the living room Robert said 'Oh you didn't have to clean up, you can just sit down if you want.' Kyl wasn't used to this kind of treatment, he usually cleaned everything for him and his mother. 'Oh.. okay mr. Robert.' Kyl said as he sat down on the couch. 

'Mr. Robert.. can I please stay over tonight..? I don't have anywhere to go..' Kyl asked quietly. Robert looked at him with a smile and said 'Of course kid, stay as long as you want.' Kyl smiled at his answer. 'Thank you so much!' Kyl beamed. 'heh, I can't send you out alone on the street, now can I? Robert said. 'So, wanna watch a movie? I've got some Disney in there I think.' Robert asked while looking at his DVD collection. Kyl nodded at his question.

This was a new feeling for Kyl. He never felt this way back home with his mother. This feeling made him feel warm inside, as if no bad things could happen to him and no one could hurt him. He wished this feeling could last forever. For the first time in years he felt this feeling.

Happiness.
