The cold from the earth underneath me was seeping into my frail bones, making me shiver. I opened my eyes to see a bright blue sky, barely any clouds dotting the surface.
Where am I?
There were trees everywhere. Bright green grass lining the meadow and wild spots of flowers were like bursts of sunshine dotting the lawn. I heard an echo of a bird in the distance, singing an array of highs and lows. The sounds creating a sad symphony that made my heart hurt.
I shakily pushed myself up into a sitting position. I was wearing an ebony dress with a deep sweetheart neckline that was traced with even darker lace. It showcased my pale chest and legs.
A torrent of wind blew my unruly mane into my face, blocking my sight. It seemed to be trying to ravish and tug away my dress. After fighting to stand on my bare feet, I noticed something was different. I furrowed my brows in confusion.
The bird had stopped singing.
I glanced warily at the sky. An army of angry storm clouds had gathered over head, threatening to pour down. Another cool wind snatched at my naked wrist, pulling me toward something forbidden in the trees.
I didn’t want to go.
Suddenly the hair on the back of my neck rose, my heart thundering in my chest, loud enough to match the thunder from the clouds. I heard quiet footsteps coming up slowly behind me; the metallic bite of fear was prominent on my tongue. I turned to face the unwanted sound.
The first thing my mind registered was eyes with only the pupil visible, staring into the darkest, most hidden corners of me. I shuddered and took an involuntary step back, causing myself to brush up against something warm.
I gasped, but I should have screamed while I could.
Before I even had the time to think I felt my breath being forced out of me as a hand closed around my throat, pulling me to face them. This can’t be happening.
Sapphire eyes stared back at me with a hint of menace seeping through. It was strangely beautiful, like the ocean right before a hurricane, anger boiling beneath the calm.
My eyes were burning and I kicked out weakly, never making contact. Tears rolled down my cheeks and my lungs felt like they were about to burst. There was a searing fire clawing its way into my throat, causing me to cry out in pain. The hand squeezed tighter and I heard a frightened whimper escape my chapped lips.
Someone laughed, sending chills all over my slowly numbing body. My mind was rambling and trying to shoot out coherent thoughts as it was losing its life. My heart cracked against my ribs, sending a blazing fire through my veins. No air was going into my lungs. My vision was slowly going in and out of focus. Everything was a blurry mess.
All I could see was blue.
After a few minutes my mind began to go numb and the burning in the back of my eyes had stopped. I didn’t feel anything anymore. Only myself drifting off peacefully into nothingness.
