With this new thought also came the survival thought. I had to keep the promise I made to Chad and I had to survive. I decided that today was the day that I was going to find more uninfected people like me. Sweetie was good and she went crazy whenever one of those things came by the apartment. It was like she could smell them from a mile away, but the one thing she couldn't do was pull a trigger. I had to find some one or more to have my back in case I needed it. I was good on my own but more people had a better survival rate then just myself. I couldn't use any phones, they cut that shit weeks ago. Hell, I was shocked the rest of the utilities were still on. So I decided I'd find them the old fashion way. I grabbed a book bag and filled it with a few bottles of water and some snacks, some light ammunition, and a few knives. I tucked Sweetie under one arm, locked my house down like Fort Knox and headed out into the city.

I figured taking the SUV would be my best option. I wasn't sure exactly who or what I would find, but I had to try. It seemed like within a few weeks there was nothing left of any kind of humanity. Everyone was either dead, "undead" or on the run trying to find some kind of sanctuary from this plague. Everyone lost contact with any one they ever knew or loved. I drove around looking for any one of the kids I went to school with on my way to my best friends house. We lost contact awhile ago but I had to see if she had made it. She lived down this old dirt road that seemed to have stretched for miles. Every house looked the same. Old and worn with nothing but destruction. Every window was boarded up or broken and there was blood everywhere.

Those things were scattered here and there but I had enough ammo to take them out if needed. I slowed down to a creep as I pulled in to Staceys driveway. As I got closer to her house, my eyes darted around almost in a panic. I didn't know what state I was going to find her and Matt in and I just didn't know if I could take it if either one of them had been turned.

I turned the ignition off and shoved the keys in my pocket. You can't trust anyone right now and I didn't know if anyone was around waiting to steal my car and leave me to die out here by myself. I pulled a pistol out of my bag and slung it over my shoulder and slowly opened the door. I told Sweetie to stay in the truck. If I had to make a mad dash, I didn't need to be worried about her. So far I was good, I heard no moans, no shuffling noises so I headed toward Staceys window. I had to keep my gaurd up just in case.

I started peering through her windows and it didn't look like alot of destruction happened in the house. The outside looked worse honestly. There was blood everywhere. Puddles and splatters all over her porch. I was besides myself. I could only picture the worse.

As I was looking into the windows, I never heard the footsteps come up from behind me. There was the click of a hammer and then cold steel on the back of my head that made me jump and hold my breath. The voice behind me said " are you infected?", I shook my head no. My heart and mind raced. The voice behind me said " slowly turn around and lift your clothes up so I can see. One mark and I'm blowing your fucking brains out". Slowly I start lifting up my shirt so the woman with the pistol on me can see my back was clean of bit marks and scratches. I start turning around with my shirt still lifted. I need her to see I'm not infected so I don't end up with a slug in the back of my head. I slowly turn around looking down at my feet.

Before I knew what happened, She let out a squeal in delight and grabbed me and gave me a big hug. I look up to see Staceys bright brown eyes looking at me. I sighed a bit of relief and was finally able to catch my breath. " I'm so sorry Rose, shit is crazy around here, I didn't mean to slam a pistol to the back of your head but you never know". "I know Stace, everything has gone to shit, I dunno what to think anymore". She interrupted me and said " where is Chad? He in the car? We have to get him and get inside " as she turned to start toward the SUV. " Stace, he's not in there, umm"...and my voice trailed off. Stacey being her half bubbly half airheaded self kept on going," is he back at where you guys are staying? Speaking of that, where are you two staying, is it safer then here? I'm so glad you came, I've been so worried about you guys".

I had to cut her off, she's so chatty and I'm pretty sure she just forgot we were in the middle of the apocalypse. I looked at her and said " Chad isn't in the truck, he isn't back at the apartment, he isn't any where"..and my voice started to crack as it trailed off. "oh my God Ro, I'm so sorry, I didn't know". Before shit could go all emotional, I heard Sweetie flipping out in the SUV. Stace and I looked over to three of those things headed toward us and one clawing at the truck trying to eat my dog. Without thought, I shot the one at the truck. Perfect shot and the bastard went down! Stacey shot at one of the three coming toward us. I never remembered Stacey ever knowing how to shoot but much to my surprise, she was a pretty good shot. She got him right between the eyes. I got the other one Stace, you take the last one..
