now, harley quinn. it is pretty clear that over the years her appearances are fueled by fan service. hence , the revealing clothing that is incredibly unrealistic to fight in. there are many iterations of harley, but the one i am going to be talking about in particular is margot robbie's take on the character. now it is no surprise that margot robbie absolutely nailed harley while still giving her own spin on the character. there is one aspect that i dislike though, and it is not something margot robbie has 100% say in, her costumes.
i am going to be discussing my thoughts about her costume, starting with what she wears as a physiatrist. it is nothing too over the top, just something you'd wear to work, simple jeans and button ups. moving on, her club outfit. considering harley's character, who is insane, that outfit is very tone down and 'normal'. it is something that is traditionally pretty, and that goes for her hair and makeup. it is what we normally see and associate with being 'sexy' and it is quite obvious as to why.
the whole film is shot with the male gaze, and presents harley as nothing more than the 's*x crazy girl'. now for harley's main outfit, i hate it. it is iconic, sure, but other than that it is nothing special and does nothing to show the audience of who harley is. which, i am not surprise by, as harley does not have that big of a role in the first film. the shorts, if you can even call them that, are extremely short to the point of it looking like underwear. and along with the whole "daddy's lil monster" thing, it is kind of uncomfy. this and her hairstyles in the movie. throughout the film, harley has pigtails, a hairstyle commonly worn by young girls. that mixed with the s*xual undertones of the character is unsettling, even with harley's space buns in one scene.i applaud margot robbie for being able to do most of her own stunts in the costumes, considering that she said it herself that they were uncomfortable. i could imagine, i mean, come on. heeled sneakers?
harley's costuming in bird's of prey, is perfect. it encapsulates harley, she is wacky and over the top. her hair is cut of, but still worn in pigtails, but this time it is worn low. still a child's hairstyle, but it isnt being used as something sexy. it is used as something child-like, which harley gives off with her wacky outfits. compare the two clubbing outfits. in this film, harley is more comfortable. wearing pants, a cape-like jacket, a sports bra with a sheer shirt over it, and a pair of killer boots. and of course, the makeup, the one bedazzled eyebrow is something fun and wild but it fits harley. we can see her dressing for herself and experimenting. there are too many outfits for me to discuss, so i will just discuss her 3 variations of her fighting outfits.
the first one we see consist of high-rise shorts, pink sports bra, and that iconic jacket. compared to her shorts in the first film, these are way more comfortable and more realistic to fight in. also side note, love her socks in this outfit, totally matches her bag. the next variation is pretty much the same, only gone with the jacket and in with a white shirt over it and fingerless gloves. a detail i like is that the gloves are to represent women holding your arm in the form of support.
her last variation is a gold overalls and the pink sports bra, practical as she does not have to worry about flashing anyone. and the design is reminiscent of her original jumpsuit from the animated films.
that is my rant done, because i do not
have the energy to talk about the other outfits. this is all just my opinion. another side note, love the diamonds are a girl's best friend scene and her outfit at the end of the movie? perfection.ᵒᵏ, ᵗʰᵃⁿᵏˢ ᶠᵒʳ ˡⁱˢᵗᵉⁿⁱⁿᵍ. ᵇʸᵉᵉᵉᵉ ☆ミ(ᵒ*・ω・)ノ
(joker and harley's relationship is toxic, can we please not romanticise it?)
