It's been three days since Cedric Diggory told you that he fancied you. And three days since you said you possibly liked him back. This was the first Monday you woke up in a good mood in a while. You and Draco make your way to the Great Hall together, "I got no sleep tonight," he says as he rubs his eyes.
"You know you can sleep in my room whenever but we have to find a way for you to sleep better on your own," you tell him.
"I know," he sighs as you sit down at the table. As you eat, your owl comes, dropping a letter right in front of. You pick it up and instantly recognize your Father's handwriting. Slowly, you open it, reading each word carefully;
Dear Aubree L. Pattinson,
Your Mother and I have seen the press and are highly disappointed. You know the rules, and you are aware of our expectations. We are unsure why you thought this would be exceptional. We know you know better, and you are to stop seeing the Diggory boy right away. No questions asked. If I hear of you disobeying your Mother and me again, there WILL be consequences.
-Your Father
Your face falls as you read the words on the paper. It's not like you thought your Father would have a different reaction, you knew he would tell you to stop. But you were still upset. Draco notices your change in mood, "what's wrong, Pattinson?" he asks, and you pass him the letter. He reads it quickly and looks up at you sorrowfully, "Aubree, I'm-"
"It's fine Draco, I knew this would be the response," you shrug.
"Knew what?" Dawn asks, sitting down next to you. Draco passes the letter to her, "you aren't even together though. Nothing is stopping you from being friends," she says, trying to make you feel better.
"Yes, but I fancy him, though. I don't want to be friends," you tell them.
"Well, don't look now, but Cedric is on his way to the table," Dawn says, and you tense up.
Cedric lays a hand on your shoulder, "Hey, love," he says, smiling brightly. You don't return it, and his eyebrows furrow together in confusion, "you alright?"
"Yeah," you say coldly.
"Aubree, clearly something's the matter. Did I do something to upset you?"
"Nothing is wrong. Just leave me alone, would you?"
"What did I do?" You look into his eyes, you could see they were filled with uncertainty and hurt.
"Sod off Diggory. She obviously doesn't want to talk," Draco angrily buts in. Cedric goes to say something but stops himself. He looks at you sadly before walking back to his table. You let out a sigh.
––––
Instead of sitting with Cedric like you have been the past couple of weeks, you sit with Luna today. Cedric walks in with his usual smile, but it is soon replaced by a frown once he sees the seat next to you is already taken. He sits next to Alaric and whispers something to him. Alaric looks back at you, confused, but you avert your gaze to your book.
"Aubree," he whisper shouts.
"What?"
"What's the matter with you?" He asks, but you just roll your eyes and ignore him, "Aubree. Aubree!"
"Bugger off, Alaric."
He lets out a sigh before turning back to face the front of the class, he and Cedric were whispering something you couldn't hear, but you knew it was about you. You couldn't help but feel bad for ignoring Cedric like this, but it was way easier than explaining what was going on. Then explaining that your whole family discriminated against other houses. That they think Slytherins are superior to every other house. That your Father is just as horrible as Draco's.
"You know Aubree, ignoring the boy might not be the wisest choice," Luna whispers to you.
"What?"
"You will soon understand," she says, and you look at her confused, but didn't want to ask just to be answered with a riddle.
––––
"Hey Bree," Dawn says as she catches up with you.
"Hey," you say as the two of you continue to walk to dinner.
"Fred wants to eat with me today, so I won't be joining you guys at dinner today."
"Oh, well, I see you later, then?"
She smiles and nods her head, yes, before walking to Fred. He gives you a small wave, and you return it. You continue off to the Great Hall, and once you're there, sit down next to Draco. He seemed very annoyed while Pansy talked to him, "so, who are you going to ask to the Yule Ball?"
"Not you, that's all you need to know."
"Why not," she asks, pouting.
"Maybe you can go with Goyle or Crabbe?" you say, copying her pout.
Her eyes narrow at you, "nobody asked for your opinion, Pattinson."
"Pansy, don't speak to her like that. I'm the only one who can," Draco says sternly.
"I like when you tell me what to do," she says, rubbing her hands up his chest. Draco forces her hand off, "what was that for?"
"Sod off, no one wants you here," he growls. She lets out a huff before getting up and sitting next to her 'friends.'
"I don't understand why she can't get the hint," you say, laughing, and Draco shakes his head.
"Beats me. I'm nothing but mean to her."
As you and Draco ate and spoke about anything, your eyes wander off to Cedric's table. Your face hardens when you see a girl obviously flirting with him, "look at that," you say to Draco, who follows your gaze, his hands form into fists.
"That fucking dick," Draco says as you look down at your plate to play with your food, upset even though you know you shouldn't be, "wait, Bree," you look back up and see Cedric gently taking the girl's hand off him. He gets up and moves to the other side of the table. A small smile finds its way to your face.
