"I just wanted to check in on how Scarlet was doing at home."
"Well, we were just about to sit down for dinner if you'd like to join us." My eyes widened as my mother opened the door further, inviting the unexpected guest inside. I immediately dropped my controller and ran towards the door. I didn't even care, I slammed the door in his face and stood in between my mother and the handle.
"Mom! You can't just let him in here, this is the one place in the world I don't have to deal with him!"
"Scarlet! That was incredibly rude... He's a police officer. Do you even realize what this could mean for us?"
"You don't get it! He's my regulator... We've finally managed a good relationship in school and I will not let you ruin it!" My mother brushed me off to the side, opening the door again despite my protests.
"If now is a bad time, I'll just come back later... I really don't want to impose."
"Nonsense! Our home is open to everyone, especially to those who keep the community safe. I insist." My mother once again gestured for him to join us at the table. From the side, I watched him with death written in my eyes. Despite my best wishes, the officer took his hat off and walked past the threshold. He was officially violating the sanctity of my home... impeding upon my territory. For the first time ever, I felt myself growl. My blood was boiling, my heart was racing... I wanted to sink my teeth into his neck and punish him for this insult to my privacy.
My growls were met with a slap on the cheek. "We'll have none of that! He is our guest, and you shall treat him with the same respect you give us, you hear me?" My mother's opinion was set in stone. There was nothing more I could do about it besides suffer. "Come eat." She beckoned, leading our little dinner guest towards the table. Watching his back, I could see him eyeing up the inside of our home... What a fucking spy... He was probably looking for anything incriminating, hoping to find our Achilles heel then sell it out to the government to get rid of us... I wasn't going to be the one to hand it over, that was for damn sure. My parents on the other hand, they were a different story.
"The food smells wonderful Mr. and Mrs. Sanderson. Are you sure I'm not impeding?"
"You are..." I mumbled under my breath, fists balled at my sides.
"Of course not! Go ahead, sit down. It's no trouble at all, we have plenty to eat." My mother welcomed him with open arms, glaring me down from across the dining room. The three of us sat down, albeit against my will, while my dad walked in from the kitchen with the food. I was lucky enough to be sat directly across the table from him... The whole dilemma gave me PTSD of our lunches together. It made me sick.
"To be honest ma'am, I only dropped by to make sure Scarlet was eating. I've noticed she hasn't been eating lunches lately and it's been concerning."
"Scarlet? Is that true? Have you not been eating?" My mother feigned concern from beside me, though her concern sounded more like a personal attack. I couldn't believe this was happening... First, he walked into my home, and now he was tattling on me like some spineless rat?!
I stood up from my chair with fork in hand, stabbing it into a piece of ham on the center platter. My eyes never left his. If this was the game he wanted to play, I was going to come out on top. "Why don't you just mind your own business!"
"Scarlet! Is that any way to behave?! I don't know what's wrong with you young lady, but it stops now!" My dad finally spoke up, his voice much more stern and cold compared to my mother's scolding. I sunk into my seat with a huff before he attempted to apologize on my behalf. "I'm sorry about the way she's behaving. Lately she's been acting much differently than the girl we raised."
