The church bells rang, scaring the doves away.

"There goes the peace," you laughed at your own joke as the white symbols of peace flew away, free to leave. Unlike you.

You groaned, glancing out the window as the priest droned on, praying and preaching about things you knew since you were a six. You were eighteen. You really did not need a recap if it took this long.

"Right, no, I'm out of here," you put your hands together meditatively and bowed your head humbly, feeling the scrutinizing eyes of the superior nuns around you. You passed the pews and picked up the pace once you reached the church doors, bumping into a tall, fragile-looking man. "O-oof! Hey! Watch it!"

"O-o-OH! I-I'm terribly sorry!" The man clumsily spun around to face you, bespectacled blue-grey eyes framed by long, silvery hair that was held up by a black ribbon. You looked him over with a frown. He wore a black priest robe with embroidered crosses and white gloves. "A Sister?"

"Uh...yeah. Hi," you inclined your head to look up at him and forced a bright, welcoming smile. The kind of smile you would think people of the cloth were taught in nun school, not that there was a nun school around here. "Name's [Full name]. Call me [Name]."

"R-right! H-hello! Sister [Name]...Ahaha...Yes, I'm Abel Nightroad, Father or Father Nightroad is fine," he looked down at you with the warmest grin. "I best be off on my priestly duties, now!" He turned around and shuffled off, but not before tripping on his own robes.

"Oop, there he goes," you sighed softly, scratching the back of your head as you watched the clumsy man stand upright again. "Are you really a priest?"

"I am," he nodded, a more serious look taking over his face. His smile was less overbearing. "You seem different. Are you new?"

"How could you tell?" You asked, tilting your head to the side. He cleared his throat softly, eyeing the hand on your hip and your freehand hanging casually at your side.

"You...are still young, no doubt! Ahaha! Aaanyway, I better go now--maybe we can sit together for tea sometime--bye!" He spoke too fast for you to catch anything after his nervous laugh before he zoomed off and disappeared around the corner.

"What a silly man," you commented under your breath. You turned around to head back inside the church before bumping into another weird man, only to bump into a younger nun. "Oof! Oh. Hello, Esther," you smiled pleasant.

Esther Blanchett was an occasionally-rebellious novice nun who came to the convent a day before you did. It had been a week since your arrivals and you two wandered everywhere together. While she was oblivious to what was actually going on within the Vatican, you did not trust the Church or its leaders. With rumours of dark forces and the living undead, it was hard not to be so scrutinizing.

"I just bumped into Father Nightroad," you shot her a sarcastic look and she laughed. "Ever heard of him?"

"Of course! The Father is a friend of mine," she nodded as she locked an arm around yours and walked with you from the church. "I have a feeling this isn't the last we've seen of him."

It had been a year since then. You were still the new nun but things had changed. Esther was sent to a convent out of the country and Father Nightroad took her place without the Mother Superiors knowing. When no one was around, he would clumsily help you with household chores--and drop a few glasses and break a few plates while he was at it. When he preached sermons in place of a sick priest, he always walked out with you and it alarmed the other nuns. You had made friends with him.

"Sister [Name]!" Abel called after you, catching up with you on the way to church. The nuns around you stared. "S-sister [Name], I w-was wondering--um...after the sermon, of course--how about that cup of tea?"
