When I hear the loud sound of the brakes, I get confused. Why would we be stopping now?
I open my mouth to ask as such, but Blair just puts in my pacifier.
"It is important that you stay quiet and in this room," he warns with an anxious air around him.
What the hell?
"Bu-" I start around the pacifier, but he immediatly shushes me.
He leaves, and I want to follow him, but I know I can't.
After a couple minutes I hear voices, two males, one of them Blair's. I try to hear from where I'm at but only catch a few words.
"Alone", "too bad", and something else in a warning tone. I wanna know what's happening! I can't just be left in the dark all the time!
I sneak quietly to the wall next to the door, heart pounding. I can't be heard for whatever reason.
I still can't hear, so I lean forward a bit, closer to the door. I bite my pacifier anxiously.
I lean forward too far and stumble. I catch myself just in time so I don't fall, but the door slides open. Shit.
There's a human looking man talking to blair with short black hair and brown skin. I freeze as he turns to look at me, and Blair's eyes widen. I let my pacifier fall. Shit fuck.
The newcomers eyes turn to a shade of orange as he makes eye contact with me. Who is he? What is he? What in the fuck is going on?
"I thought something was up with you Blair," he says after a couple minutes, and as he turns away his eyes turn back to brown. "But, you told him practically nothing. I need to know all the details. You know this."
"Blair?" I ask, confused.
"Fine," is all Blair says, and not to me.
The newcomers eyes turn back to that shade of orange as he makes eye contact with Blair. Mind reader?
He hums a little bit, looking back at me. I flinch, not knowing what to expect.
"It is okay, small one, I shall not harm you."
My fear turns to anger. Small one?
"I'm not Small! What is it with theses fu-" I stop myself just in time. "Stupid nicknames!"
"You'll help us?" Blair asks, completely ignoring me.
He sighs, "Its the right thing to do here," he replies. I'm still totally confused.
"What's going on?"
Blair looks at me with calculating eyes. "He's going to help us stay away from my masters."
"The goredants who...?" I leave the question open ended.
"Yes."
"So," I say, turning my attention to the newcomer, "how are you going to do that?"
"I have a few tricks," is his vague answer.
"Okaayy, so why did I have to stay hidden?"
"You're-" he looks at Blair, who shakes his head. "Blair thought I wouldn't help you if I knew the full situation," I brush off the silent exchange as more stupid secret keeping, as another question seems more important.
"What full situation?"
This time Blair speaks up. "The family I work for is particularly good at hunting. Especially humans like you. The year within your race was discovered, many humans have tried to escape... They all ended up... deceased."
"Um... oh," is my shaky reply. I wish i never asked.
"But," the newcomer chimes, "they didn't have me! Normally I would charge you a fortune for this." He gives a sharp look to Blair, "but because it's you... I can give you a discount."
"It is much appreciated, friend."
"Yeah, yeah, don't thank me yet. I've never hidden anyone from those psychos, they might see through it," my eyes widen and my breathing gets faster. I can't be found. They'll destroy me.
I scrunch up on the floor, hyperventilating, and I feel myself being picked up and cradled. This is too much. I get light headed and and start to overheat slightly. They'll torture me! I bite my lip, trying not to cry.
"Don't fear, little one, he's never failed before," Blair comforts.
"Never?" I say, and while he shakes his head I'm still terrified. I hold onto his shirt with all my strength, having nothing else, and shove my face in his chest.
Nap time?" He asks, but I shake my head.
"Don't leave me. I need someone," I say, not knowing how else to explain it.
"Of course baby boy, let's get some juice, okay?" He asks and I nod weakly.
He carries me to the kitchen and once there repositions me to be on his hip. He pours apple juice into a sippy and hands it to me. I drink it frantically.
"Let's play some more," he suggests in a higher pitched voice. "What do you want to do?"
I sink deep into the comforting feeling. I need this. If being a toddler is what it takes to calm me down, then I will do it.
I've read something like this online once, it had some letters in there, and I thought it was cool how people can go into a childlike state. I stop drinking and take a deep breath, really clearing my head, trying to reach for that headspace.
I feel free. I feel innocent, and anxiety free. I feel grounded. It's a wonderful feeling.
"Cowor," I say quietly, my voice high pitched. I wanna color, but that new person is here.
"Speak up, little one."
"Noo," I whine, and when he looks down at me I point at the newcomer.
"That's just Val, he's not going to judge you, now speak up," he says calmingly.
"I wanna cowor," I state louder, and Val makes a noise that sounds like a coo.
He sounds so cute!" He says excitedly, running up to me.
"Noo!" I whine again and hit Val away. I'm not cute!
"No hitting," Blair warns, and I stick my tongue out.
"Do you want to color or not?" He asks and I immediatly put my tongue back in my mouth. "I thought so."
We all go into my room, Blair carrying me. I suddenly love the bright colors.
He sets me down and points below the bookshelf. "Coloring books and crayons are there. Do you want me to get them for you little one?"
"No, I big!" I tell him, and pick out a color book with castles and princesses and princes on it and a box of twenty-four crayons.
Val stands in the doorway, smiling at me while I get the supplies.
Once I get settled on the soft carpet with everything where I want it, I pick a page with a castle and start coloring.
"Good boy."
