The Bright Girl

nobody knows whats beneath the surface

of the bright girl who blushes

when spoken to in verses

nobody knows that she has these barricades

and the bright girl is gone

and the blush on her cheeks fades

nobody knows that when she is alone

the bright girl is hurting deep down

past the muscle and into the bone

nobody thinks to ask her if she's alright

the bright girl always has a smile

and always appears happy and light

nobody thinks to notice that when

the bright girl isn't doing too well

its just brushed off again and again

the bright girl is tired of swimming

in a sea of ignorant minds

who only notices her when she's winning

the bright girl isn't all that bright

and if you just ask her

she'll say she's not alright
