Your POV
As intimidating as L-corp looked in the day time, that was nothing compared to how it looked when the starless sky surrounded it and it's LED features. I had only been in the city for a week and already I was terrified. Pushing down my internal doubts and screaming I entered the building.
The entire place looked sterilized and white and I squinted for a moment before regaining my composure and making my way to the front desk. The name-tag said Jess and I smiled at her when she looked up at me. She seemed to relax a little and when she smiled back I reached into my bag that I thought of as magical as it managed to fit enough things in it to power and feed a small country, and pulled out a book for her.
One of my many talents that have no worldly help in real life was judging people's genres and if I guessed correctly, she was a mystery lover. The book was huge and she gazed at it, looking between it and my purse. I shrugged and grinned. She thanked me for the book before skimming its description. I cleared my throat.
"Oh, right sorry um what was your name," she stuttered and I chuckled at her bright red face. Giving her my name she typed into her computer which I note was the newest L-corp model and I jumped slightly when it flashed green.
"You're all clear," she said, gesturing to the elevator. I thanked her before walking into the elevator, desperately hoping that I hadn't just made the biggest mistake of my life.
By the time the doors opened, I had managed to make myself a cup of tea thanks to the limitless bowels of my purse (that sounds so wrong, oh well) and was sipping it casually when a small explosion caused me to jump out of the way of pieces of shrapnel. Then, then I lost my tea, spilling it all over the floor. I would mourn its loss in my dreams. Anyway, I looked up, enraged at the loss of my delicious tea when I spotted it. Ignoring all humans and conversations and other such hells I made my way over to the prototype.
It was clearly an older model, but I noted some upgrades such as an added cerebral cortex which linked biology into the tech knowledge. I was impressed and I barely noticed the woman behind me when she cleared her throat. By this time I had been working for about ten minutes and had already gotten out my welder and face-shield thingy (I don't know what it's called) as I restabilized these poorly attached joints. I noted that some of the workers had their hands on some weapons and looked both angry and curious. I looked up at the woman who towered over me.
"Could you move please, you're blocking my light," I said before turning back to my robot. I decided to call him Hugh. In the reflection of the robot, I could see that she looked taken aback and I tried to remind myself to remember that humans and robots were very different things.
"Who are you exactly," she scoffed and I turned back to her, still keeping my face shield on. (Coronavirus, we can't be too careful lol)
"(F/N) (L/N), pleased to meet ya," I said holding out my grease-cover hand.
I finally took off my mask and blew some of the hair from my face. With the mask off I could see the woman better and noted her high cheekbones. She had startlingly good bone structure and I made a mental note to study it later.
"I was hired by Miss Lena Luthor to work here so here I am," I said gesturing with my hands," Although she hasn't shown up yet so I was fiddling because I don't really know what I'm supposed to do.." I trailed off.
The woman looked at me flabbergasted and I took the time to wave at my fellow workers who were stifling laughter and grins behind their hands and I made another mental note to ask them what was so funny later. The woman cleared her throat and brushed her dress off. By now, I had forgotten that she existed and was concentrating on the fiberglass lens protection and mumbling to myself. She cleared her throat.
"Yes," I asked, trying my best to sound polite although when it came to me and Hugh, I hated getting interrupted.
"I'm Lena Luthor," she said and I just shrugged. To be honest I didn't really care. Her family had done terrible, terrible things to mine, but I stuck to logic and facts and logically, she hadn't done anything wrong. To me, she was just another person with a startlingly good facial structure. I reached out to touch her face, taking her by surprise and rubbing grease on her. The room seemed to freeze. I nodded to myself and turned back to the Hugh, who had started to power up.
"How did you do that," she asked, rubbing grease from her face. Without looking up I explained.
"The wires had been crossed and I had to replace the fiberglass lenses with thinner titanium alloys and while I was there I saw that the wires were uninsulated so I fixed those and powered the internal fans that had overheated themselves."
She raised an eyebrow. "Well Miss (L/N), welcome to L-corp,"
I just nodded before walking away to see what else this place had. She stared at me in disbelief and a small smile graced her lips.
The hours passed by much too quickly to me, but by the bags, under everyone's eyes, I knew they disagreed. I noticed Lena and another woman trying to activate what was very clearly a portal. I saw her slam the device down onto the table before talking to the woman. I gestured for Hugh to follow me as we had become quite good friends and I reached the portal. The problem was quite simple and I solved it easily before walking away. My purse had once again proven quite useful.
"What are you doing, "I heard an accusing voice say behind me and I turned to see a woman and Lena standing behind me.
"Well, I noticed that you were using quantum anions to power the portal device, but I realized that you had forgotten to replace the thermal conducts therefore giving you half the power you needed and the extra power was disappearing into the titanium shell overheating it and causing the overall temperature of the machine to be rising higher and higher making the fans having to work overtime and the wires to be over-insulated," I explained in an obvious tone as though I was discussing the weather. Lena's mouth dropped open and the woman stared at me with an unreadable expression. Ignoring them both, I turned back to the machine and turned it on. It worked immediately. (Big Brains, what did you expect)
I turned back to them smiling, glad I could help. After all, portal technology in itself was exciting! The woman introduced herself as Rhea which I thought was a peculiar name, but I ignored it and shook her hand, glad to be here with someone who made sense. As we both talked I didn't notice the curious looks that Lena shot me as what I was discussing was going over her head. At around eleven, Lena was packing up while I was just starting to feel a little tired.
"(Y/N), are you still here? Work ended five hours ago," Lena exclaimed.
"Oh, its nothing, what are friends for," I grinned. She looked surprised for a second and I raised my eyebrow in confusion.
"Are-are we friends," her voice was small and a large contrast to the confident woman that I had spoken with earlier.
"Well, you and Rhea are the only people here to have a conversation with me without falling asleep so yes, yes you are," I smiled. She grinned widely, but I could feel her searching my eyes for remorse or lies, but there were none.
Just as I was about to leave, I poked her face again and she blinked.
"Cheekbones," I explained before turning and disappearing into the elevator. Lena just laughed and shook her head.
I passed Jess's desk and noticed the dozens of coffee cups littering her desk as she leaned into the book I had handed her. Lena came up shortly after me and let out a small shriek of surprise upon seeing her. There were dark rings under her eyes and she was shaking and twitching as she frantically turned the pages. She banged her fist onto her desk in anger and we both jumped.
"I don't need sleep I need answers," she exclaimed before promptly passing out. Lena and I shared a wary glance before carrying her upstairs to Lena's office and dumping her onto the couch.
With a wave, I left L-corp and overall, concluded a rather productive day.
