sign language.

i sighed as i tapped my pen on my table. my best friend chi yi was absent because of staying the the rain for too long yesterday which i greatly regretted because we were both in the rain yesterday. i had a fever that night but i'm fine today. he's just not here today.

the teacher arrived with a boy following him. a new kid?... in the middle of the school year? that's really weird time to arrive.

the teacher motioned the boy to introduce himself but instead of speaking, he got out a notebook. weird.

he went through the pages and found the page he was looking for. he turned his notebook for us to read.

"i'm chen sixu."

"... and i'm deaf."

silence was the only thing heard in the classroom. the teacher motioned him to sit at the back seat since it's the only seat available. everyone stared at the boy as he walked to his seat. must be really tough to not hear anything.

i stared at the boy while others took notes and payed attention. i wasn't really in the mood to do anything since all i'm interested is him. he looked really interesting and i was fascinated by him. at the end of the day, all I think about was him. it was dismissal time so i rushed home to study about deaf people.

the people on my wechat recommended me silent voice so i watched it the whole night. damn, does that movie pain me. i saw how sixu introduced himself like shouko did. maybe he watched the movie too. whether or not, he watched the movie, i don't want to be like ishida.

this made me more and more interested in that guy. i researched more about the deaf people and learned a bit of sign language. it's just day 1 so i'll just try greeting him good morning in sign language.

the next day arrived and i tried to practice my greeting again and again. i didn't wanna mess up and make things awkward. i was gonna go to him and say hi when chi yi stopped me and gave me a hug.

"miss me?" chi yi asked during the hug.  can't help but hug back. "of course, big eyes," i said and broke the hug. i turned to sixu and he was reading a book. chi yi looked at me then to the boy.

"we had a new student?" he asked looking at the boy. "yeah," I nodded. "He's deaf."

"a-ah," he exclaimed. "that explains why you were naruto jitsu-ing awhile ago." he joked and laughed. i glared at him.

"it's not funny, chi yi. it's called sign language and i learned it all night," i said proudly at the unamused Chi Yi.

"well what did you learn then? can you gesture my name? what about an elephant? Or giraffe?" he asked and i nervously shook my head. he just stared at me, disgusted and disappointed.

"i don't know if it's the right one but i've been practicing this all morning." i said as i gestured the greeting.

"what does that mean?" chi yi asked raising his brow. "it means good morning, i think? amma try it out." i said and walked to the boy silently reading.

i softly tapped his shoulder and he looked at me. oh my, it's giving me goosebumps. i nervously gestured a good morning and prayed to heavens he understood what i meant. i looked at him and he was confused for a bit but after a few seconds of awkward silence, he was smiling like a puppy. woah, what did I do to make you smile that wide?

he started gesturing sign language and i just stood there confused since i only knew good morning and hello.

chi yi was laughing at me for looking lost at what the boy just gestured. sixu saw him laughing and took out his notebook. he scribbled something and turned the notebook to me.

"that's really good actually."

I wrote thank you and turned the notebook to him. He scribbled something back and turned it to me.

"what's your name?"

"liu jin"

"cool. did you learn that all by yourself?"

"the good morning? yes. i struggled a bit since it was my first time."

"i can teach you sign language if you want." he scribbled down and gave me a smile. i was taken aback by the smile because it looks so adorable on him!

the teacher arrived and we had to go to back to our seats. i ripped off a piece from my notebook and scribbled a sure and passed it to him. i waited for his response but he just gave me a smile. my Gosh, stop making me fall for you!!

when the teacher hasn't arrive yet, i'd go to sixu and learn a few bit new sign languages. chi yi was just messing around, gesturing bad words at me and do naruto jitsus at sixu and i. sixu would just laugh at him while i'd smack him in the face for being disrespectful.

i learned more sign language at home and after a few months i got the hang of it. we would talk— i mean, gesture sign language to each other or just write what we felt in notebooks.

more and more, i fell in love with him. okay I wouldn't say I'm in love, but infatuated more and more. he was really fun and charming in his own way. i feel like i'm the only one he talks to since the others can't do sign language.

"you know he can hear you...right?" chi yi said as we were walking home. i just looked at him confused and disgusted. "he's deaf, chi yi."

"have you ever stop and notice he's been wearing hearing aids?" i stopped my tracks. h-he's been wearing hearing aids the whole time!? i've been muttering i love you's to him since the first time we got close and he heard all of it?! i just looked at chi yi with a scared look. he just nodded and smirked. i hate this demon. what do I do now?? how did i not notice the hearing aids wtf is wrong with meee

[ THE NEXT DAY ]

i looked at sixu silently reading our math textbook from the outside of the classroom. this is going to be really awkward!!! i turned to chi yi and he was giving me a thumbs up, still laughing his ass off. i rolled my eyes. okay, let's go.

i walked to the deaf boy shaking, nervous of what he'll say. he noticed me walking to his direction and waved at me. aACKKK stopppppp

"i heard you can actually hear me." 

this caught sixu off guard and chuckled. huh? bro why you laughing? it's not funny!

"i wasn't planning on keeping it a secret." he gestured. wOT? "i'm surprised it took you this long to know that. you're like... the only one who didn't know."

"y-you-!!!" i raised my fist to the air attempting to punch him but he was just laughing. i put down my hand in shame.

"you're so lucky you're handsome."

"Hey, I heard that."

"i- i forgot... hearing... aids..." He chuckled.

"also..."

"i love you too."
